Hi all. Can anyone help me as I'm worried about Winnie. She's been fine until I noticed this morning she let out a really big sneeze and has since been sniffly. It sounds crackly more than runny. She's eating and squeaking as normal and isn't breathing quickly or anything.

I've had a cold recently and am worried I might have passed it on to her or if it's a uri.

I do have some baytril in the cupboard but not sure if it's worth trying as I don't want to do any harm. If it's still there in the morning then she's off to the vets and if it gets worse she's off to emergency Sunday vets.

Can you guys suggest anything I can do in the meantime?

It could be dust from the hay or even the humidity is having an effect but you are right to be cautious.

I don't think human colds can be passed onto pigs though there is a chance if you aren't careful with not handling her when you were ill (but am sure you were).

You could try some kind of steam therapy using a bowl of hot water with 2 drops of Olbas oil in it, place it next to the cage. Unless you have a steam inhaler in which case you could use that, hold over the nose in 5 second bursts.

Is her breathing laboured at all?

When you go to the vets, ask about Bisolvon as it will help clear any mucous. They will also need to check for fluid on her chest and give diuretics if so.

Children's Sudafed can also be effective too but I would prefer she was checked by a vets first.

Hi. No her breathing isn't laboured and I'm just off to go and get some olbas oil. She is a long haired although she has had a trim so it could be just the temperature and maybe the hay. I've just made up a new bed for them without any hay as bedding so I'll see if that does the trick. I'm using the snowflake soft chip and they are moving into my bedroom so I can keep an eye on her

The olbas oil seems to have done the trick. She's been out on the lawn once it cooled down a bit and we've just had hugs and it's nowhere near what she was like this morning. I'll keep an eye on her tonight but hopefully it's just the weather. Thanks for your help xx

That's brilliant news.
All is definately gone but she's still off to the vets this aft for a check up. The other, willow has a droopy eye which I'd like to get checked out too. The lid has gone droopy and on closer inspection it looks like a fatty lump at the bottom of her eye. I've at last found a piggy savvy vet so they are getting intros later. Any idea what the little lump may be. It's about 4mm long by 3mm?

That looks like it could be pea eye to me (also known as Fatty eye). It can be linked to a heart issue but not always. Glad you have found a good vet.

She is a nervy little pig although she is better than she was when I first got her. Would they treat it or let it be?

I would think they would leave it be unless it was bothering her. Is she ok otherwise? good weight? no laboured breathing or random coughing?

It is fatty eye and Winnie is fine too. She seems so knowledgable she's worth putting on the vet locator. You should be on it too! Many thanks for all your help. I feel better now

Glad it went well, think you just need to message admin to get a vet added.

Oh blimey, no my knowledge is quite limited.

Thanks. You know far more than me that's for sure. I just appreciate the help and reassurance you've given me. I'll message sport billy with the details tomorrow. The vet did recommend a haircut, although I thought they were quite short already bearing in mind how quick their fur grows. Much to their disgust they are feeling a tad exposed but cooler! Thank you x

We have to give Mrs Fuzzy hair cuts when it is warm too, she doesn't appreciate it either.
