A wile ago now one of this forms members gave me an adorable brindle sow named Bella ,
Bella is a chunky sow at around 1.7g
anyway Bella has a chronic nasal problem which makes her produce this nasal hooting sound all the time
Vet said it would do no harm , it is to do noise bone , and an opp was out of the question , he just recommended
pediatric surfed .

Anyone else have a pig with this problem

@sport_billy can you amend the title please?

hi there & welcome to the forum,:wel:
WoW a 1.7kg piggy & i thought my Grace was chunky at just under 1.4kg!

has she had a URI (upper respiritory infection)?
does she have laboured breathing, nod when breathing or sleep deeply(difficult to arouse)?

what is she bedded on? is it a sawdust/ woodshavings or something of a dusty nature? this can bring on respiritory problems or allergies that could affect breathing.
if fleece, have you changed your washing powder or conditioner that could make a difference if she has sensitive lungs etc?
is that paediatric sudafed?

does she have a crackly sounding chest suggesting excess fluid at all? does the weather make any difference to her condition? is she an indoor or outdoor piggy?

how old is Bella now, any idea roughly?

how guinea savvy is your vet? are they exotics or just a general practice?

hopefully with a bit more information we can give you some more suggestions to discuss with your vet.

whereabouts are you based? which country or for the UK county. more tailored advice can be given if you could amend your account with these details. have a look in the toolbar up the top & click in your account/profile to update. thankyou

Hopefully you can soon get to the bottom of it. fingers & paws crosses :)

Hi , Billy , no defo not
Upper respiratory . all clear from the vet after a naisal swob and l don't use detergent on my vet bed cage liners or flease , all poops are removed with a slicker brush then the vet beds are washed
down with a hose pip , may take a bit longer but saves on electric and washing powder

ah its ok, i put the bit about amending the title for sportbilly to amend for you- he's a moderator/admin. (helpful chap... so i have tagged him for you)

might be worth giving the beds a wash every now & again with hot water to prevent a bacteria build up if always done in cold water.
Ah that's ruled that out as not detergent allergy though.
how does her chest sound? normal or a bit rattley?

Whilst it may very well be obstructed nasal passage....I would certainly want to rule out heart issues given her weight and the "hooting"

This cannot be done via stethoscope and an Xray would be required to look for fluid buildup around the heart (and potentially also an enlarged heart). Many vets will dismiss a possible heart problem in guinea pigs from just a stethoscope exam....because they have not encountered the issue before....and sometimes you need to be quite persistent (or go to a cavy savvy vet)

Worth having a read of this article on guinea lynx and looking at the case studies. The first time I had a suspected heart pig I printed the whiole lot out (inc case studies and x-ray images) and gave them to my vet to read. They agreed to do an Xray and sure enough she had an enlarged heart, was put on heart meds and lived to a grand old age.

There is a cavfy-savvy vet locator at the top if you are in the UK.
