Snuffling / snot / ear infection?!

Sorry to have to drag up this old post but it's the same problem.

The boys were treated for ringworm succesfully, and have been indoors in quarantine for the last 5 weeks. Now that they are clear I decided to move them outside... although they've been indoors, they have had no heating on and the window has been open, so not much difference in temperature. I moved them out on Tuesday... today I found poor Jester all tucked up and feeling sorry for himself, and the snot / mucus has come back just as bad as before. I've cleaned him up but he's lost weight very quickly and looks quite dull eyed. I've brought both of them back indoors and feel awful that I might have caused it by moving them.

What could be causing such violent mucus / snot around his nose and eyes? Really crusty. Also he's covered in lice again, literally overnight - poor boy. Hesitant to bath him because of the snot.

hmmmm....could it be allergies? One of my cats is allergic to the outdoors (grass, pollen, the whole 9 yards). Gets the crusty stuff in her eyes (as well as they become inflamed) and she sneezes and her nose runs. I realize they're not the same species, but it could be something to consider...

Hope you can figure this out for your sake and poor Jester's! :(

They have been on grass for the first time but apart from that everything is the same - bedding etc. Will see if it gets better back indoors I guess! Poor boy.

Thanks

Oh dear - I hope you can get to the bottom of this and on top of the lice.

All the best to poor little Jester and to you!

I was just going to suggest hayfever Sophie - I got an email newsletter from Gorgeous Guineas about it and this is a quote from it:

Hayfever symptoms can overlap with those mentioned above and may include:
 • watery / red eyes
 • frequent sneezing, often when bedding has been changed, or new / different hay used
 • runny / dripping nose
Symptoms can be worse first thing in the morning due to the pollen rising. On on days when the pollen count is high, symptoms can be worse and improve when the count falls again.

I will try to find a link to the newsletter as I think she archives them on her website.

Thank you! It's odd because he came from auction, and was really snotty when he arrived, and the stuff around the eyes looked like snot too (sorry but the best way to describe it!) almost green. It cleared up pretty quickly and hasn't been back until now, might be a coincidence that it happened when I moved them outside but I don't think so -nothing else has changed!

Have given him tonic and fluids and critical care and baytril for good measure and will see how he is in the morning. I'd be relieved if it was an allergy, at least I'd know!

Don't know about animals, but in humans, green snotty mucus tends to suggest some kind of infection, poor Jester. I hope you manage to get a diagnosis soon and it's easily treatable.

Vedra gave me Bisolvon last time, which it mentions in that article... I didn't use it all, so will give him some of that again, although I think he's had enough meds for tonight poor lad!

We live and learn...!

Just when you thought they were over it all! Something has obviously bugged him. No point in fretting yourself, you've done all you can and more for him and his other "manky" pal and there is no reason to have expected this "relapse" after they have been pretty well for a while. I hope you can get to the bottom of it, he's a gorgeous chap.

Will keep you updated! Will see how he goes tonight. He's making that unhappy noise they make when they're ill, I hate that.

Thanks for all your help everyone

Good news, let's hope it is something as simple as an allergy. Pretty severe reaction if it is an allergy but maybe something really, really gets to him!

Still keeping my fingers crossed for the poor boy!

Quick update - Jester is still quite crusty around the eyes and to a lesser extent around the nose, I've been bathing twice daily just to clean him up. He is gaining weight again and keen to eat... but I'm at a loss as to what has made it flare up and until I know I can't rehome them. So for now - they're staying put in my spare room!

Joker his partner is fine and didn't have a relapse
