Hey!
I've been reading on this forum and read a few people post about using the "Snuggle Safe heating pad" during winter and just wanted to ask a few questions about it!
When do you start using it? Like how cold does it get before you use it?
And if I were to put it under a little bit of their bedding with hay on top, would that be safe for them? I just don't want them to get burnt!

Also as a bit of context, my piggies are 3 and 1 and live outside all the time. My 3 year old does have a bit of hair loss on her stomach (we know what it is, don't worry abt that :) so it won't burn her stomach?

Thanks!
Evie, Poppy and Mini :)

(this is the one I was thinking of getting)

Hi, my piggies are indoors but when I had outdoor piggies, I started using them when night time temperatures dropped below say 15 -10 degrees. During the depths of winter, they also had them during the day and as they last around 8 hours, it meant they had them the majority of the time. I would think about giving them the snuggle safes especially overnight, now.

The fleecy cover that comes with the snuggle safe prevents the guinea pigs from getting burnt

I start putting it out when I find that the inside temp in their cage is getting below 15-16c. I’ve started putting them in every day now.

They shouldn’t burn. I usually put it in on top of the hides. Or just dump some hay on top of it.

You need to start using them as soon as it gets 15 degrees or less.
They are in fleece covers and the piggies will not get burnt by them

I put them under their hides and then put hay on top of them as it helps keep them warmer for longer. They say they last 10 hours but in reality, outside, i don’t find they do, I get about 8 hours but my piggies are actually in a hutch in a shed so are generally warmer anyway

:agr:
Definitely get one each.
I actually have four heatpads between my two piggies

I have two heat pads. I heat them up in the morning 8am and again at 6pm. I put them between the wood shavings and hay.

I used to share this at the beginning of every season of cold weather, but the past couple of years, I have been remiss. In 2010, we had a near tragedy with a Snuggle Safe warming disc. I shared that as a moderator on Handicapped Pets. The discussion thread took on a life of its own as we gathered more and more incidents and reported to organizations we thought would care. The thread is still valid, the product is still out there and I am notified by Google of any mention of the product which allows me to share this thread in the attempt to avert any further harm to anyone or their pets. Please take a moment to read the thread and share it on your own pages and any discussion groups that would apply. It could save a beloved life. not to mention property. Thank you. Here is the discussion thread with very valuable information. Snuggle Safe Warning! - Page 4 - HandicappedPets.Net

Blessings to you all for the upcoming holidays and prayers for the coming new year.

Thank you for alerting us. Several of us on here have been using the snuggle safes (some for years) without issue. I think as with all things, you should be careful and discard if you see any changes in appearance etc.

I have 2 snuggle-safes and although my pigs are indoors they live by the backdoor on the ground and my old house can get chilly! I put them underneath fleecy blankets or a fleece tunnel - that's very popular with my arthritic old boy as he flops out in the tunnel where it eases his stiff knees. The pads are actually quite hard so it's nice for them to have some cushioning too. If you use on a cold surface they stay warmer for longer with a bit of folded fleece underneath to stop them losing all their heat to the floor of the cage. Mine only get nuked for 6 mins but I think it depends on your microwave...

I love the image of him flipping in the tunnel 😍😍

When he's settling down he shows he's claimed the tunnel by rumbling and tossing his head up and down. He started doing this under the plastic shelves in the cage area because they make a nice 'bang' as they are lifted and dropped which lets everyone know where he's gone. But when he does it in the old floppy snuggle tunnel it just looks like he's fighting himself in a bag! The girls still look impressed though 😄

I don't use mine very often, usually only if I have a sick piggie and they don't get the full time heating up as I only want them warm. One bubbled in the middle and smelt of burning after only being used a very few times. I threw it away, this did put me off them. I've not had to use one yet since but this incident did put me off.

I don’t blame you! Did you contact where you bought it from?

I was also wondering if they’re the kind of thing you have to replace periodically, like bottles?

No I didn't contact where I had bought it from as I'd had it for sometime and couldn't remember where I got it. I very rarely use them. I now have the cheaper ones from B&M as I only warm them for sick piggies, I don't need them to stay warm all night like people who have animals in sheds.
Yes, I think it would be wise to replace them regularly especially if used nightly over winter.

I got mine from the local Notcutts garden centre and the price was really good considering they normally charge you a ton for everything else! They have a per section there though - that's why they were stocked.
