I went to my local pah today. All the animals water bottles were green and dirty. I was behind a couple who were buying some long haired guineas and all the stuff they needed for them with help from a member of pah staff.
1st mistake was when he said they didnt need a brush as they groomed themselfs.
2nd mistake was when he told them that they wouldnt grow much bigger than they were at the moment yet they were young babies.
3rd mistake was filing there trolley with guinea pig sweets sold by them.
I did try to correct this but they were more inclined to believe the staff. I can see this piggies becoming very over wieght and poorly due to an incorrect diet. I wish pah would educate there staff!

I see alot of parent buying small pets from P @ h and always think " i hope you know what you are doing"...:{

Piggies do groom themselves too a good standard (mine do anyway and dont smell!) and i dont brush mine but they do get a dead hair stroke from me once a week :))... Then again i have short haired piggies... I couldnt cope with long hair again after having an Angora rabbit years ago!

the piggies for sale were a longer coat breed (not great at breeds) they werent your average smooth coat and had rosettes on the bum would guess at a pru cross but not sure

*some* piggies barber other piggies, but its best not to rely on this! i have two long haired and two short haired, i groom all of mine so no-one feels left out!

sound like aberuvians (like my maggie) so yeah, need lots of grooming

They really are useless. I have often had to ask them to lower the water bottles because the little pigs can't drink. Also, every time I am in there I reach in and tip hay out of the hay rack and onto the ground for them.

Well i emailed with a complaint lets see if i hear back! I suggested they sent there staff on a training course.

I wouldn't hold your breath! I emailed customer services a week ago and still haven't heard back as they had a baby guinea in a pen with a rabbit pow-pow maybe phone the store and ask to speak to the manager?

Sounds like a plan! I just think they should have to give out correct information if they are going to be allowed to sale animals.

I complained to pets at home after seeing some very tiny piggies unable to reach the water bottles, they did reply and also said pigs are 8 weeks old before being for sale but these were tiny.

Crikey my P @ h only sell the short haired ones... :{

I was surprised they were selling longer coated ones to as normally only have short haired piggys. It was definatly longer haired with rosettes as i had a very good view of its bum! I'm hoping for a response but not holding my breath

I was in once and a Guinea pig was standing on top of a rabbit so that it could reach the water! It looked very cute but if the rabbit hadn't been laying there it wouldn't have got its drink and also I was worried the rabbit might not appreciate being stood on

The water bottle thing bugs me as well! I constantly tell the people in there they are too high for the piggies to reach... Maybe i should speak to the manager this time and give him some advice... mallethead

Sorry i have to join in this thread! I bought my 2 little boys from p@h and they were in an awful condition. Both had lice then later ringworm, i informed the store so that they could treat the other piggies from the litter but they didn't seem at all bothered. They did however with out question reimburse my vets bill (which makes me wonder how common this is!) I wrote and complained to the head office so I'm really glad that others have done the same. I hope you get a response Charlie!

I had an issue with a major pet superstore many years ago when I took my two young daughters to look at hamsters ... my posting is on here.

Anyway there were dead hamsters in the cages and they were on their backs with their legs chewed away! Imagine explaining that to young children.

I asked to see the Manager and basically wiped the floor with her. My kids still remember it to this day. She agreed that their standards weren't as they should be. I said I would be back to check on them, I would report them to the RSPCA and I did go back many times. Their act was cleaned up, but probably temporarily though.

I can't understand how a major pet store is allowed to sell pets with such limited knowledge and expertise of the staff. Surely there is an NVQ or something that they should study to advise the general public on such important matters as animal welfare.

I have to say that my Bristol P&H is next door to a McDonalds and I wonder how many parents are persuaded into the pet store after a Happy Meal by their kids and end up coming out with a pet that they know nothing about the welfare of.

Just my opinion, of course! :x

Theres a college in on the outskirts of keynsham that do nvqs in animal care! I studied for my btech there back in 2001. i think your right goldie that parents will get talked in to going into that pah and buying something. Mind you if you eat in that mcdonalds you must be mad all the storys i have heard

My third ever guinea pig was a 'mummy please' situation she was just soo cute and I was very young, we had only gone in or fish food though

I bet, though, that she was well cared for and loved by your family! :)

I grew up in keynsham! what area are you in goldie?
still no reply from pah

Well of course my mum would never have been persuaded if the other two wern't looked after properly, but it shows how people go n for somthng else have a look at the pets and end up leaving with one.

Not sticking up for PAH at all here, but I went into the store the other day in Selby and a sign on the wall said that the water bottles were green because they put some kind of vitamin supplement in the water...
Not sure if this is true or not, just thought I'd bring it up! :)

It is hard to believe that so many people seem to trust the 'advice' of PatH staff isn't it. I have stood there too listening to complete rubbish spilling from the mouths of clueless staff. They are a retail company, full stop, so their ultimate aim is to shift stock, make money and say whatever they can to the customer to make sure that they purchase from them.

Would people trust a double glazing salesman so readily or a second hand car sales person ? NO, people (general public) would understand that the ultimate aim of the company is to make a sale. For example, if you go in there and ask what the best food aviliable is for rabbits, surprise surprise, they will say PatH nuggets. If you say you want a rabbit and a guinea pig, they will of course tell you that it is fine to keep them together, as they can make a sale for both animals and all the assocaited things like a hutch etc. I believe that mostly they will tell the customer what they want to hear !

You would hope that people would do some research and find some independent, unbiased advice before even entering PatH. Seems that when purchasing animals or animal products some people are quite happy to trust the untrained 17 year old behind the till.

well i recieved an email in response to my complaint informing me that the water was green because of a suppliment they add. They said that all staff had to be trained before they were allowed to sale an animal for them and that as i couldnt name the member of staff they couldnt do anything! They also said there treats were sutible for daily feeding in small amounts. at least i got a response!

Supplement my backside! what supplement makes the water go green? i had to complain at my local P@H again this weekend, the poor little piglets couldn't reach there water bottle (there bottles were clean!), the girl i complained to said she'd go and speak to her manager about it! whats to talk about? just lower the flipin bottle! :o:x:x

And if they are adding a supplement to the water, why? If they are being fed the right diet (p@h pellets, hay and daily veggies) they don't need it

Sorry rant over :red:x:x but they do make me mad sometimes!

my friend was saying about the P@H she went to the water looked green and dirty - if you added that vitamin c drops, does it make the water go like that? i have no idea as i have never used them. We have a short of long haired piggy, and i have been combing her hair every other day, but noticed that it was slightly matted right under the bum. We have only had her about 3 weeks now, but i will deffo be keeping an eye on that. I trimmed it off in the end.

i've never use vitamin drops in the water, like someone else has said they should get everything they need in their pellets, veg and hay. I've heard the drops make water taste horrible to piggies, so maybe in a roundabout way they DID make they water green, because the piggies wouldn't drink the water and no-one bothered to put fresh water in every day as they thought someone else had done it? no excuse though as this IS definately neglect
