Hi, I'm new to this board but am just saying hello and that i am sooo excited yet nervous as getting some new piggies at the weekend fingers crossed from the potteries guinea pig rescue in stoke. I'm nervous and sad as unfortunately my piggies passed to rainbow bridge hence why i need a new friend for my gorgeous Dylan we are going to see if he likes a baby aby thats 5 weeks old i am so excited about this as always rescued never had a baby and also getting 2 older boars called foxy and choco as theu are just to adorable not to take home lol so aslong as i pass the checks they will be the newest family members in my house.

Any tips on what i should do to prepare Dyl for his big day out as i so want him to have a friend as he loved his gang so much.

Hi and welcome!

Great that you are taking Dylan to boar date. According to Suzy, getting him a cuddly humping toy will be the best thing you can do for bonding boars; hopefully, the toy will absorb any excessive humping that might ensue when boars get excited. Thankfully, the vast majority of boars is great with babies since they are not a threat to them in any way. Some adult boars can be such cute "uncle pigs" indeed!
If you want to get an idea, have a look at Suzygpr's boar dating thread (she runs a rescue in South Wales):

When bringing Dylan and his new friend home, please have the cage thoroughly cleaned, including walls/grids/mesh and any furniture. If you can, rearrange things so the space is as neutral and new for either piggy. Make sure that you have got everything in twos - hideys, bowls, water bottles, etc. If necessary, spaced well away from the other same item, so noboar can go possessive.

You will want to give more pellets to a growing piggy than you would to a mature adult, so you will have to find a compromise for the next few months. Ideally, youngsters will need constant access to pellets until they they have got most of their size at 6-9 months. From then on in you can very slowly reduce the amount to the handful they will need as adults from 12-15 months onwards. Otherwise, youngsters don't have any different requirements. Enjoy the baby antics while you can - they grow up so fast!

I am sure that Helen will have told you what she expects space wise. If you need tips for cheap cages or hutches, please post in our housing section.

I am very much looking forward to pics of all your boys! All my piggies are rescues, too; one of them has been rehomed from the predecessor of the Potteries Rescue. I have just dated my two cataract lady at a rescue that has neutered boars for them to choose their new husboar last month. So far, piggy dating has always been a huge success for me and any (usually bereaved) piggies. Best of luck for you and Dylan!
