well, its been far too long since we had piggies in this family (a week is too long but its been well over a year now) since i had to rehome my beautiful babies when times got tough. I'm now working part time to bring in a bit of extra cash, and had been considering a pair/trio of girls for us. my friend then told us before christmas that she was taking in a pair of very young sows who were not handled at all, and had been left with a boar in a cage together. the woman who owned them said she didnt want them all anymore, she was giving up breeding, and they might be pregnant
and wanted my friends work place to drop them in with their guinea pigs.
so my friend took these 2 extremely frightened girls home and gave them a warm loving home. they are now getting a little happier with human interaction and a couple of weeks ago, 1 gave birth to 5 babies. 2 girls and 3 boys. she offered me the 2 girls, as she cant keep any of the youngsters. i happily agreed to take them on. she is just waiting to see if the other sow is likely to have any, but so far shes put on a lot of weight as she was very undernourished, but doesnt appear to be pregnant. she is very experienced with guinea pigs as she works at a farm park where they breed them and she is working with them day in day out.
so in a few weeks, we will have guineas again
I'm hoping she can sort out a 3rd sow to go in with the 2 she has as i would much rather a trio than a pair so if something happens to 1, its no great rush to find a new friend for the lonely pig.
we have the indoor cage all sorted for them, ready to house them until warmer weather when they will have a large 4-5ft double hutch to enjoy, and a nice run to graze in the garden.
