So I Just When I Thought We Were Safe...new Problems

Ok, so the dosage of hat is ok at least...he's starting to look fed up. Hiding, not eating :( Called the vet and got through to a receptionist who was worse than useless about the wee problem, didn't put my call through to anyone and just told me the antibiotics should clear up a UTI. Feeling very worried again

Spoke to a vet, he'll be back in tomorrow if he doesn't start weeing normally overnight. Wondering if it's a sperm rod stuck, as both times my boys have been under they've ejaculated a fair bit once awake, so going to check thoroughly when I'm home from work.

He's eating hay and soft mixed leaves, and I've been syringe feeding so hopefully his strength is up x

How's he doing today?

He's much better on the wee front today, no dribbling or nasty smells - hopefully it was the medication/stress getting to him.

He's reluctant to eat a lot which is understandable, but he's a lot happier today. He's going back tomorrow for a checkup and clean up as I'm struggling to keep the hole clean, otherwise though all positive :D

Badger had his post-op check today, all looking pretty good. He's still reluctant to eat anything himself but he's picking at more and more, so I'm sticking with syringe feeding until he's back to how he used to eat. Hopefully the reluctance is due to discomfort rather than being unable to eat with only one lower incisor!

The lump that I originally discovered that led to this has still been hanging around, so the vet had a look and gave it a squeeze - wow. Lots and lots of pus coming out of that tooth hole! Most of it went on the vets face, poor bloke. So I've been given orders to keep squeezing it out and if it doesn't reduce like that then they will remove the capsule.

Baby steps!

Yay for baby steps. I really hope things keep improving from here. Keep us posted!

Thank you! He's doing really well since my last update, brave little thing. He's started feeding himself more and more and is producing poo pretty close to his normal size, so I've stopped the syringe feeding for today to see if that encourages him to eat even more (seems to be thankfully).

Had a bit of an incident with runny poo, but I stopped the Baytril and it cleared up within hours, so he's now just on the Flagyl and it seems to be doing the trick. No more pus and his gum is looking very clean and pink, and the lump feels empty now and doesn't seem to be filling again. Fingers crossed he's really on the mend

Badger is on the mend after an infection in his jaw stemming from an injured tooth, which became infected.

There is a separate thread about his diagnosis and such, but now he's been treated I thought I'd start this one for some help as the other never got too many responses.

He's on Flagyl, 0.75ml's a day. The lump on his jaw has reduced and only appears to be producing small amounts of pus now. The pus is being emptied via a hole in his mouth, where his incisor used to be (but at the base).

As the infection is incased within his bone, the vet is reluctant to operate or place a shunt, as it's a risky area. Hence the antibiotics and draining through his mouth.

However I was just wondering how long it was for others pigs who have had the same issue for the pus to stop? The vet can't give me a time, they've just said we have to try as long as possible and if nothing happens, surgery :(

Thank you again guys x

Hi! I have merged the threads, so we can check up on what has gone before for better and more specific advice on the ongoing treatment. Your thread is monitored and answered by the people with real experience, so you will get better responses if they can refresh their memory.

How long an abscess keeps producing pus depends on how deep and severe it is. The abscess pouch needs to heal from the inside out. This can take several days to several weeks; there is no firm rule. @furryfriends (TEAS) is by far the one with most experience with dental abscess

Abscesses are all very different and the time needed for them to resolve can vary immensely They generally heal fairly quickly, with plenty of flushing. Obviously you aren't able to do this, if the abscess is draining into the mouth. I have never used Flagyl for abscesses, but have always found Zithromax very efficient at dealing with abscesses. Are you massaging the lump to ensure it keeps draining?

Thank you for merging, wasn't sure whether it was ok to post a new thread on it :)

Thank you, I've been massaging the lump a few times a day, but he's very reluctant to let me and puts up a good fight. It is obviously still tender and I feel terrible for touching it when it's like that :( but I've been persistent and get a bit out at a time, never huge amounts.

I will ring the vet today and ask about Zithromax, the Flagyl is giving him so soft poo and bright yellow wee even with pro-biotics.

I can see that the pus emptying into his mouth is lessening, and the lump is much much smaller, but as it's bone hard it's impossible to tell how much is left in there, which is half of the frustration - there isn't a clear end in sight :(

I also feel awful for constantly bothering him and the wound, I wish he knew I wasn't doing it to hurt him :(

Very frustrating situation :(

So Badger is up and down like a yoyo. At times he's his old self, wheeking for food and such, other times he just sits in the same spot for hours on end. I think it's the antibiotics making him that way as he was fine before the op and prescriptions. He is returning to the specialist on Friday and I'll probably ask if they can operate, as I hate seeing him like this.
