I'm so upset - my little rescue sweetie Fraggle gave me an awful shock this morning :(

He had developed a slight UTI so took him to vet on Saturday morning who prescribed antibiotics and gave him an anti inflammatory injection - she checked for stones but could not feel any. I've been giving him antibiotics twice a day and he seemed to be picking up and was a lot better, climbing my shoulder etc on the Sunday!
Put him to bed last night and he seemed fine, but by this morning, he wasn't himself. He squeaked when I picked him up to say good morning ready to clean his cage, and then I saw it - one side of his bottom was red raw, and worse still, there was a gaping hole in the belly next to his bottom :( :( took him straight to the vet as an emergency and they are not sure why, but they think he's chewed himself down there until he was bleeding :( inside the wound, you can see his muscle protruding through :( :( I don't know why he has done this, as I clean his bottom twice a week, he gets his cage cleaned twice a day because I don't want him sitting in his pee, gets plenty of hay, veg, nuggets, water, and has chewy toys for his teeth :( the vet thinks the UTI might have given him an itch and that's why he's done it :( :( my poor baby :(

They've cleaned him up for now and I've been told to keep giving him the antibiotics to prevent infection and they've given me a painkilling solution for him. He's got another appointment on Friday to see whether he needs stitches, but they say it's going to be nigh on impossible to heal if he keeps biting the wound... so it's a matter of wait and see what he does :(

Has anyone ever had this situation? The vet couldn't find a lampshade collar small enough for him - if I made a make shift one do you think he would wear it and would it be safe?

For background, this is his third home due to various issues including previous fellow guinea pig fights, and the RSPCA specifically wanted a home for him where he would be on his own but had plenty of human cuddles. Only had him 3 weeks and love him to bits... hate to see him in pain :(

Oh gosh!what a terrible shock for you! I cannot believe he did that to himself. Is it stress or depression maybe? I really hope he gets better soon. I think bekki has a collar spare.

Thank you :( really think it's linked to the UTI, because he's settled down well after coming to live here, he's not been so shy either. Like a colleague said at work today, I don't really know what happened to him in his two other homes, so maybe he has been through a lot as far as we know :( if piggy collars are something that can be used (I was scared in case it was bad for their necks), I might try and make one... I'm surprised our vet didn't have one :/ x

He's lost half his ear during a fight in one of his previous homes where there were 100+ piggies... I just want to give him a loving and peaceful life! :/

Poor little guy, what an awful thing for you to find must have been so distressing. Hopefully the painkiller will keep him pain free and the antibiotics ward off infection. Never heard of anything like this before. Huge hugs and love to your little one x

Poor Fraggle, hope the pain relief and antibiotics help. Wonder what caused him to do that to himself.

Poor you and what a poor little lad, hope the meds sort him out and that he doesn't end up hurting himself again. On the collar front there was a poster on here a few years back who has since left the forum - their vet made the piggy a custom collar. Come to think of it he was having similar problems to your Fraggle so it might be worth seeing if the thread is still about. The poster was 'Little Pig', and I'm fairly sure the vet who made her the collar was Ann O'Meara at Ewell who would probably be happy to say how she made the collar if you are going to try do one yourself.

How's Fraggle doing this morning, hope he's had a peaceful chew-free night.

Poor baby! I can't even imagine what a shock that must have been for you. I hope he improves, and in the mean time you can find a solution to him chewing on himself.

Hello everyone, thank you for your kind comments and helpful tips x
No, I'm afraid he chewed more last night - woke up this morning and there was lots of blood all over his cage floor and his sore was open again. By the time I got home from work though it was looking less sore, but a little more pus filled (I'm still forcing the antibiotics down him though to try ward off infection :( )
He's just not eating or drinking though :( I still give him some evening cuddles (even though he squeaks if I touch his mid to lower back, so I try to stick to the head neck area) and during his playpen time, he spends most of it trying to eat cardboard, newspaper or biting his wood bridges and tubes - almost like a guinea pig form of pica :( but maybe that's because the antibiotics are making him feel queasy and putting him off his food like it does with us humans :(
I'm going to try and mash up some cucumber and pellets and mix it with water to try and syringe to him. What do you think? Or would something else be better mashed up? Thank you very much xx

Tbag, thanks - sounds like a very similar problem :( except I think Fraggle did have a UTI because I caught him hunching and squeaking when peeing, but perhaps he has a bacterial infection on the outside too.... x

I'm thinking of you at this time. One of our chins had Pytrometra and was acting similar to this that was hard. I hope I never experience this with my boys. Lots of love going his way x

I am at a loss :( tried mashing some pellets but no luck, and he wouldn't eat the mashed cucumber. The syringe I've had off the vet is tiny and won't even pick up the mash. I have to struggle to get him to take the Baytril as it is :( Feel sooooo sorry for him :(

Oh no! What a shame he is doing this to himself. @Bekki maybe can help with a collar? He really does need syringe feeding. Can you get critical care?

Did you try making the pellets and water thinner? Can you cut the nib of the syringe? You have to force the pellets down. I know that feels mean but it will save his life.

Well... managed to mash up 5 or 6 pellets with some warm water and mixed a bit of kiwi pulp into it and I think he swallowed some. Syringe broke though :/ Hope he eats some hay in the meantime x

Will syringe him some water now and then give him his antibiotics before bed... :( my poor baby :( xx

Oh how terrible for you :( it's hard to believe that he bit himself to blood because of a UTI! Poor boy. I hope it heals very soon and he is back to himself x

No idea why it's happened :( I can't think of anything I've done wrong... I've been racking my brain, but I'm sure I've done everything as right as I can :/ :( :'(
