Hi everyone,

I knew I was right from the start. My girls aren't well - I stupidly took my vets word for it when I knew that something wasn't right. They've been squinting, squeaking when peeing, breathing heavier etc - My vet told me they were in good health and couldn't find anything wrong.

To cut a long story short, I've just found blood round Pebbles vaginal area and had to cut the fur around Pringles bum as it was urine stained - I am so so annoyed and upset that my vets allowed them to suffer.

I knew that they had a UTI all along.. Always trust your instincts I say.

Will be getting them into a piggie savvy vet ((Molly Varga)) ASAP.

Sorry you are having this hassle and hope the vet can sort them soon.Everything crossed for them

Thank you, I just feel like such a failure that all 3 of my guinea pigs are expressing these symptoms. We ran out of a bag of bedding the other month, so until I could get hold of another bedding which I liked, the girls were on shredded paper for around a month. Even though I spot cleaned 3-4 times daily, obviously they must of been sitting in their wee and building up bacteria at night.

I knew this was the theory all along. Fed-up now, should of gone to a piggie savvy vet in the first place and saved the money I've wasted towards vet bills which I know will help them!

Gosh - it is so frustrating isn't it. But you thought you were doing the right thing. Of course you go with what the vet says - after all, they are the ones who are meant to have to knowledge! At least you are now confident that you know what is going on so you can fight your piggies corners.

Fingers crossed they are on the mend soon. Don't be hard on yourself! x

Thank you so much. These symptoms have been going on for probably well over 2 months though - The vets fooled me into thinking they were OK all along - I really hope I'm not too late :(

They are still eating, drinking, pooing and weeing and are still cheeky and nosey, but they are squeaking and hunching, squinting, breathing heavier and aren't very active. I feel so stupid!

I hope that treating for UTI will take care of their health, but to be honest, most of the symptoms you are citing are NOT typical for UTI. The UTI can have resulted from the lowered immune system due to their other problems. While a urine infection is not a joy, it is also not likely to kill. Bloody urine/pain when urinating are often the first symptoms.

What could it be, Wiebke?

OMG - what bad luck you are having but you are not to be blamed at all - you have been back and forth to the vets with them and constantly posting on this forum for advice and I really think you have done everything you can. Fingers crossed the other vet can help them. You really are going through it right now :( x

I am so sorry that you are going through this and must admit that I agree with Wiebke.

Your piggies have been on Septrin which I would have thought would have cleared or at least improved the symptoms of a UTI. Did your vet ever test their urine at all? That should have showed up a UTI and although it can happen, you would be extremely unlucky to have all 3 piggies with a UTI at the same time.

Please do not blame yourself as you have done everything you posibally can x

I really hope your little ones get well soon. It is a good idea to wash water bottles daily and wash all vegetables too.

The vet did a urine test with Porche a few weeks back and found traces of blood but that was treated - I suspected that the UTI returned with her and the other 2 have caught it also. The other 2 weren't urine tested unfortunately. I am just go confused now. And fed up :(

Plus, they were only on a 10 day course of septrin (well.. 7 days as the vet didn't supply us with enough) .. UTI's can take months to clear so I've heard!

I agree with Wiebke its more then likely to be from a lowered immune system which could lead back to what we was talking about yesterday, also as Claire mentioned you have been prescribed septrin so should have cleared up a UTI. The fact they all have it, that's odd? Blood in urine could be cystitis rather then a UTI, a vet will be able to prescribe best course of treatment. I keep cystophan in for my cystitis piggy. Worth while asking your vet.

It's good that you're seeing a piggy-savvy vet. It makes all the difference. I'm curious to see what you find out. It does seem odd that all three would have UTIs at the same time, as they really are not contagious. Hope your piggies feel better soon!

I know that this is unfortunately going to cause you yet more expense but it may be beneficial in having all 3 given an ultrasound or x ray.

My Erin was given an ultrasound last year and though it showed no bladder stones, it did show that the bladder wall was very inflamed and she needed a bladder flush. We unfortunately had to have her pts but that was because she also needed an eye removal which my vet felt she wasn't strong enough to sustain the surgery after having the bladder one just two days before :(

I understand that this will be a great expense to you considering you have 3 poorly piggies but at least it will either confirm there is something wrong or rule chronic problems out.

I am once again so sorry you are going through this x
