Hi everyone,

I have my piggy Barry here and I’m just wondering, is there any chances some piggies can have total intolerance to veggies? Every time I feedhim vegetables he gets really soft poops, this morning however it has been especially bad. Every day I givw him about one cupof veggies, yesterday it was some red peppers, celery chopped up, he also had a little bit of apple and one leaf of baby spinach. His poops this morning have been awful really soft and mucusy almost- but he isn’t dehydrated and is drinking normally. Should I be worried? I introduce new veggies slowly and am aware of the ones that should be given in small quantities. Don’t know just seems rather strange. I’ve never had it with any of my other piggies. I’ve cut veggies today and just given him hay and pellets, and the poops are getting more formed and less shiny by the hour but I just feel a bit concerned. He’s only about 7 months old but I started cleaning his sack regularly to stop impaction and there is no build up of faeces only smegma which I think is normal? Any ideas? Does it sound like I’m doing anything wrong?his butt is coated in poop and I have to clean it every hour or so.

He sounds as if he has some gut imbalance. You should stop giving him veg and see if his poops return to normal. Once they return to normal wait a further 24 hours without veg and then reintroduce some veg. He may be totally off veg for days. When you reintroduce, it can be best to start with herbs as they tend to be kinder to the tummy.
If after that, his poops go back to being too soft, then speak with a vet.

PS Impaction normally occurs later in when their muscles aren’t as efficient as they used to be. A boar of 7 months isn’t likely to have impaction.

of course! but I like to check that no hay is caught up as I would t want him to be uncomfortable.

You shouldn’t be needing to clean him out

Yeah yeah okay I’ll stop the veg and see what happens! X

Hay and bedding getting caught in his fur and around the area is not impaction. A quick bum bath can deal with that to clean up around that area if the piggy is not keeping himself clean.
Impaction is a very different issue and requires the cleaning out of the anal sack.

Thank you for your help everyone I really appreciate it! :) xx

Ah ok. My sister works at a guinea pig rescues centre and had advised me to check for. Regardless, thanks for the advice :)

just to clarify guys, often when I have cleaned his anal sack there has been hay and bedding inside- that would be uncomfortable right? am I supposed to leave it?

Bedding gathering in the anal sack is not a health issue. It’ll come out on its own
