Hi,

My two female pigs recently had a URI (less than a month ago) and were put on antibiotics. They then soon had a reaction to the medication and had gut issues so i had to feed them critical care and new meds. My concern is that some of their poops are mooshy and tear shaped still. Is this normal as they are still recovering? I did switch their pellets but they are eating them really well. Same with their hay and veggies. What do you recommend I should do? I don’t have probiotics for guinea pigs in my area (Australia) and i only have access to prebiotics, can i give them those? If i need to stop feeding then veggies can i give them human vitamin c tablets? Thanks

Please do stop giving them veggies. You will need to keep them off veg until their poops go back to normal and then for a further 24 hours after. You can then add in veg again very slowly starting with herbs first to ensure they don’t immediately upset the gut again.
They will probably be off veg for a few days until things settle (if they don’t settle then you should see a vet). There is vit c in hay and pellets so you won’t need to give supplementary vitamin c

Thank you, i’ll will be sure to do that. Is there any need to supplement them with prebiotic (there are no probiotics in my area for guinea pigs).
