Hi everyone. Just wanted to some reassurance and/or insight about my hay situation please

For those who are using the soft timothy hay from timothyhay.co.uk. do you guys give it as their main hay? If yes - do you feel it is too rich for them to have as main hay?

I have been using the soft timothy hay from timothyhay.co.uk as my guinea pigs main hay since August. I love it and my guinea pigs love it. I have never thought about whether it's too rich for them until recently as I still find some stalks on it and it is not as soft as the 3rd cut from haybox. There has been no concerns with their poops, their weight has been stable. I suppose I am more worried about what it can cause long term if it is considered too rich? Also, if it is too rich and I take them off the hay they love, will they resent me? 😅

Thank you so much! Sorry for my overthinking!

I give it as their food hay and I give ings hay from hay and straw as their litter tray and food hay! Timothy hay is absolutely fine for them to eat as much of as they want to.

I don’t know the specifics of the hay from that supplier (I’ve never used it) but generally speaking the softer it is, the more leaf and less stem it contains then the less fibre content, higher fat and higher calories it has. (So 3rd cut has less fibre than 1st but a lot of piggies don’t like 1st cut making 2nd cut a better option)
If you are at all worried then you can try mixing it with a different type of hay and ensuring it isn’t a 50/50 split. It can help to give them a variety of hay anyway if nothing else than for interest - this is why i only use meadow hay as it isn’t just one type of grass

I have emailed the supplier to double check. (And for whoever may find this beneficial). They said that their soft timothy hay is a soft 1st cut timothy hay for the first half of the year and for the 2nd half of the year it is soft 2nd cut timothy hay... i never knew there could be a soft 1st and 2nd cut of timothy hay x

Thank you. I used to give them meadow hay but I find all suppliers I have tried lack consistency when it comes to meadow hay. I did just order meadow hay from happy hay co as I liked their sample. So fingers crossed it will be the same quality when the box comes. X

I use this brand of hay and my pigs love it. However I just use it for feeding as it's rather expensive. For bedding I use a normal bale of hay bought from the local g.p. rescue.

Thank you. i know :( unfortunately I dont have much room for another box of hay so I had to use it for bedding and feeding. Thank you again, as long as someone else is using it as their main feeding hay. I feel relieved :)
