Soil/Compost for growing?

Those of you who grow your own piggie veggies or grass - what soil/compost do you use?

Grass will grow on pretty much anything. I make my own compost to which piggy poos get added, grass seed germinates fine in that but then it will in most things.

If you're buying compost I'd suggest something with decent water retaining properties as shallow trays dry out quite easily. Of course earth from the garden will work too!
