I'm new to guinea pigs, I got my piggie a few months back, he's nearly 7 months old now and lives on his own. I'd LOVE to have another guinea but I know not to get another boar as they will fight if lived together.

Do sows and boars live together ok if the boar is neutred? Or do they have to be introduced at a certain age?

It's not something I'm going to do without serious consideration, I love Sid with all my heart and he's far from lonely as he has company most of the day, never on his own for a long spell of time. I would just love to have another piggie to love :smitten:

Also, getting a piggie neutred, is it a massive op? painful? As I wouldn't want to put him through unneccessary pain bless him :-\

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! :)

I had my boar neutered and he was fine even popcorning afterwards. he now lives happily with my two sows who are a year old Rimmer is younger he is just over five month old now. I had no problems putting hin in with them he is a huge boy bigger than the sows already he gets bigger by the day.

Thanks for that :) Did you introduce them at a young age? or will they just get on whatever age? :)

I'm newish too, but Pepper, girl, was introduced to Gizmo, boy, and they didn't get on no matter what we tried but then went on to live with Smudge, boy, with no probs at all. I think it all depends on combination but don't quote me as I'm not too sure.

From what I've read about neutering, it can be a risky op, but if you have a vet who knows about piggies or routinely does this kind of op, then you should be ok.

I'm sure someone will be on soon who will be able to help ;)

I waited untill 3 weeks after the neuter to put them together. Before that they were in cages near each other so they knew each other smell. to be honest it drove the Boar crazy being able to smell girls. I had them for six months before I got the boar.

Forgot to add Rimmer was done at an early age due to his size and weight. Most vets will not do the op untill a piggie is 6 months old.

you can introduce another male piggie, i have heard that you can introduce a very young boar, which he has more chance to bond with, there is a chance that they may start to fight when they get older though.
I had my male neutered to go in with my sows, the op costs around £30, and I had no problems star was none the wiser really, wouldn't of thought he'd had anything done. You do need to make sure you find a vet who specialises in small animals, ask how many neuterings he has done for guinea pigs, and ask for their success rate. I had to wait 4 weeks to put him with the sows.
you will find lots of important and interesting info on this forum.

Thanks very much everyone for your advice! Not sure yet if I'm going to go ahead with it as I'm most worried about getting Sid neutred. I'll have to ring around some local vets :)
