I have two piggies Sam (2 years) and Dillon (1 year).

I have noticed that Sam had a slightly vet nose at one nostril today and Dillon had very small amount of crust under one nostril. Neither have sticky eyes.

They are eating and drinking fine and because I am on study leave are squeeking and begging for food every time they hear me move so I have no concerns over their appetite.

Their poos are normal and lots of them and lots of pees.

Dillon also now again makes quite a deep squeek more like a grunt and i'm not sure if this is just his squeek or not.

Should also say they are indoor free range guinea pigs.

Should I take them both to the vet? If so I can take them tomorrow after work at about 3. Then I have a dilemma about what vet to use as I am yet to find a vet I have confidence in.

I realise URI are very serious but unsure if that is what they have.....any advice?

Thanks

It could be that there's the beginnings of something respiratory (like an infection) going on, particularly as they've both had a slightly snotty nose. A vet should be able to pick up on this by listening to the lung sounds.

As for finding a vet, where abouts are you located?

It might be worth phoning round a few and asking if they have anyone who holds a certificate in small animal medicine (basically further training after qualifying), or someone who specialises in exotics.

Hope that helps!

I'm in Edinburgh. I called a reccommended vet but due to work tomorrow I can't get an appointment till monday and it would be £30 for each piggie just for the consultation.

My other vet surgery doesn't seem to be very cavy savy and I see a different vet every time I am there.

They are both extremely lively today and I weighed them yesterday and they are both chunky.

I am just getting ready to go out and wont be home till 7ish :{

Thanks

Just been through to them again both their noses are dry and I haven't heard either of them sneeze at all.

I wonder.....I have been putting extra hay in as they love to burrow underneath maybe that has irritated their nose slightly as there is sawdust at the bottom of their hay tray.

The vet I called said that one of their vets deals with the small furries and is very up to date on his knowledge. I know from a friend that he attends conferences and it very interested in bunnies and piggies.

Will keep an eye.

Mine sneeze quite regually, however the vet said it was nothing to worry about, guniea pigs can get colds, if its a small amount of discharge and they seem bright in themselves, then it maybe something less serious then URI, however they should see the vet just incase, but it may give you a little more time to find a vet you are happy with.

ok first step in cheap vets bills - forget honesty!

If you book two appointments, one for each pig, they will charge you for 2 appts.

Just call, say you have a pig with a runny nose, then take both :))

haha sneeky!

Gonna keep an eye on them and look around for a good vet. If needed I can get a friend to take them tomorrow when I'm at work.

Thanks for your help

Will keep you posted....right now the pigs are shouting on me demanding food I imagine LOL
