Some classic excuses...

As I'm sure other people that take in rescues will know, you get to hear all kinds of excuses when people don't want their pigs any more. I've had some classics recently, feel free to add your own!:

1. 'We need to get rid of our guineas because the children want a pony' mallethead

2. When someone wanted me to take all of their guineas (all under 9 months old!) because they were bored of them, they then complained that 'they would miss them soooo much' :{

3. "We need to get rid of the guineas because we need the hutches to breed rex rabbits" grrrr

4. "The guinea pig's friend died and now we want to use the run for the tortoises" !

You have to laugh or you'd cry! I've learnt to just have a fixed smile and get them in the carriers quick!

I just think that so awful i live in rented accomodation and have to leave but i wont go anywhere my guineas and cat cant come. it would be easier to move without them but there my pets my responability i chose to home them. No way could i ever just give them up even if it does me i could be homeless., Sorry I'm ranting ecause the above excuses are cr*p and people are so god dam fickle
 
Sophie I admire you, I'm not sure I could hold my tongue on a regular basis
 
LOL, it's not something that comes naturally to me either! But you just want to get the piggies out as smoothly as possible.
...

And then go home and have a BIG glass of wine! And a rant on the phone to Vikki :)

Ive seen a few on gumtree along the lines...'I'm 7 months pregnant and cant cope with cleaning them out etc'.....

Makes me laugh as I'm 37 weeks pregnant, with 5 piggies, 3 rabbits, a hamster and a gold fish...oh and a 3 year old and I have no problem managing, infact I love it......:p

Another one I see alot of is 'were moving and cant take them with us'...aka bored of them as the rabbits/piggies are always under a year old.....its never, we need to rehome our 3 year old piggie! grrrr
 
I can't believe some of the excuses people come out with - I would find it extremely hard to not tell them exactly what I thought of them. Animals are not just for passing about whenever they are no longer convenient or you change your mind - they are for life!
 
one of my guinea pigs sophie was no longer wanted because they brought her instead of a hammster as she looked so cute and now they were moving and couldent keep her anyway how the heck is a guinea pig like a hammster mallethead

Mmm trying to think of some classics I've had recently

1. My 5 year old won't stop picking them up and I feel sorry for them
2. My child is allergic to them after 2 years!
3. The dog tried to eat the guinea pig
4. There are rats living in the shed, so I think it is best we rehome our rabbits and guinea pig. I think they are scared of the rats.

Those are the most inventive I've had recently, usually it's just we're bored of them
 
The reasoning for mine was " i am ill and cannot take care of them or clean them out etc..." followed by "they are not getting enough attention" then " my son doesnt spend anytime with them" ... Then i find she has 2 ferrets now instead...

I didnt hold my tongue though...:))
 
When we got Brandy the excuse was he was too aggresive and attacked the other piggie who was her baby. He was so aggresive he got on with 3 other boars and done no harm to any of them.. rolleyes He was a bit of a yelper though when getting his nails cut :))
 
OMG I can't believe it! Hubby's just back from work to ell me that a colleague of his is taking his 2 girls back to the shop because his son is no longer taking care of the piggies. The son is 8 and receiving no help from Mum and Dad. What an a**e! I would take them (been feverishly sweeping the hall and thinking how I could) but hubby won't let me, we haven't got the room for 2 cages and my boys are still fully packaged down below....

BTW, hubby is now allergic to piggies (after 3 1/2 years) and wasn't before... puffy eyes, wheeziness, runny nose... but he loves his boys too much so they're staying. Anyway it's a full package: if the boys go, I'll go!
 
It always depresses me the number of people that get a small animal for a child, and then expect the child to fully take responsibilty! I mean, no-one, anywhere, would get a child a dog or a cat (With full responsibility!), why should a small furry be any different?!

I've not had any terrible excuses in yet, apart from someone dumping their pregant guinea pig on their poor neighbours and never coming back for them! There was two adult sows, one expecting, in a hamster cage! The poor neighbours were so bewildered when one of the girlies popped and the two adults started fighting!
 
exactly my point. This guy said to my hubby that the son was OK taking care of the piggies but now he's gone off it. I think he my have been asking for support... But I know the man and he's a selfish idiot! And what has he taught his son? that at the first sign of trouble you can take things back to the shop. Would he do that with his son? No... shouldn't be different for a pet! I'm still seething. pow-powpow-powpow-pow
 
This is the third time I have wrote this my pc keeps playing up.

On of my lads is rescue and is long haired (merino) and the excuse they gave was (sokel correct me if I am wrong) they couldn't cope because he is long haired. He was in a terrible state when Sokel got him

Igive a good brush once a week, give him a bath every 8 weeks, hair cut every 6 months, and an occasional dusting with talc. Takes me no time at all, despite working full time, studying part time for a grad diploma, having chronic health problems and two other piggies. Haven't got time can't be bothered more like mallethead. He's a very gentle and loving boy ^) and if anyone genuinely loves their pet they would gladly give them the time they need.

the silver l;ining of all this off course is that those piggies are better off without those unloving and uncaring people. I think we all agree on here that we want piggies to be happy, whatever. It just makes the elogistics of rescues and rehomes more complicated. I think we should have a licence to have pets, like in Oz!
 
I heard one once, not sure which rescue it was but the excuse was "We need to get rid of them because we won't have room for the Christmas tree otherwise" rolleyes

Awww hes gorgeous! He looks just like a piggy I had as a child called max, (1 of 3) he needed his fur trimming about once a month, he used to get terrible tangles and poo stuck in his rear end fluff so mum used to just keep it trim and give him a quick going over once a month (plus grooming a few times a week)
hardly time consuming considering the love they give in return

Blimey, i dont even know if i am going to bother putting a tree up this year as the piggies are taking the tree space up! Some people... rolleyes
 
LOL, the funny thing is I REALLY don't have space for a Christmas tree this year because of the guineas..... perhaps I should phone Vikki and get rid of some :))

I know I have posted this before, but it's appropriate for this thread; the two boys I have taken in recently who are currently up for adoption came with the excuses, "we can't afford them ...my husband has got bored of them...they don't get enough attention..." all classics I understand. They decided to get a third puppy around the time of surrendering their pigs to me, who has since cost them about 50 times more in vet fees and purchase price than their pigs ever did in their three and a half weeks with the people. Yup, less than four weeks to get bored.

We picked up a pair off eBay before the listing was pulled back in June who had been fighting - the reason they were up on eBay was, "no time, can't have two fighting pigs and I'm pregnant" they came to us with a variety of holes in them and skin problems, and of course had recieved no vet treatments for their wounds.

As some of you know I answer help emails for a large rescue and rehoming online service and have had some corkers which made me quite depressed recently, such as "I didn't know they lived for up to 8 years, I can't keep 'them that long", to "I need to rehome them as I keep falling over their cage" and "I'm emmigrating in a few days, I need to get rid of my 12 pigs urgently", some of which were only 2 weeks old.

The most common I see is moving. But as most of you have already said, surely you have a choice whether or not to move into a place which doesn't accept animals the majority of the time?!
 
It's just inbelievable how quickly people can get bored of an animal isn't it! And then you feel sorry not just for the pigs but for the puppy that 'replaced' them etc.

Makes you wonder about the human race sometimes, but as I posted a little while ago, the lovely, generous people you meet doing the same thing balance up the bad!

Very true Sophie! I've got to know some remarkable and unselfish people since I've been involved in rescue one way or the other and its these people who really help it all work.
 
I picked up a sow last year, she was living on her own in a hamster cage on the kitchen worktop ! The rather annebriated lady told me "she don't do nufink, she just sits there"

Quite what the lady expected her to do I have no idea, it's been a while since I've seen any guinea pig singing and dancing LOL

Anyway ............ six weeks later she gave birth to 4 babies - so at some time she must have been doing sumfink ! :(|):(|):(|)

Mine sing and dance all the time, you must be doing sumfink wrong! ;)

Really fed up here as just sorted everyone out and getting on top of things only to find an email from someone wanting rid of 6 more.... got 2, were pregnant, ended up with 12, etc etc. - the usual!

Oh my... that did make me smile! How do you keep a straight face / pleasant smile when you hear these things?!
