Adult Guinea Pig
Guinea Pig teeth are open rooted and never stops growing.
What does this mean by "open rooted?"Elongated Roots is when sometime the root grows or it is pushed into the jaw. When examinating their mouth, you may not notice the condition.
Bumps at the jaw line can indicate lower roots elongation while the elongation of the upper roots causes pressure on the eyes and create tearing, bulging eyes, infection, or other problems.
Externally, the only obvious sign is the discharge and the eye pulling back sometimes, but eye is healthy, it's just it's lack of being able to drain tears properly
X-ray is very useful to diagnose the elongated roots and cavies with this condition in early stages can be treated by planing the teeth properly and using a chin sling which encourage them to grind their teeth.
How can my guinea pigs teeth be "planed" when there is no issue with the actual bite itself?
