Just really felt the need to share this with everyone because I'm quite annoyed and need to get it out my system. I saw somone selling a hutch up near my brother's and decided to enquire about it thinking the next time I took the boys up there for a visit they could actually get the benefit of being outside if the weather is good. I thought it looked quite small in the photo but pictures can be decieving, especially in regards to cage/hutch sizes (and the guy had stated he housed two male guinea pigs in it). He told me it was about 90cm in length to which I replied that it was far too small for my two boys. He emailed me and said that he only put his two in there at night, that they were in the run all day and that it was a fine size because his guinea pigs were small. I told him about the minimum cage requirements and said that the hutch was just not adequate for 2 boars. In reply to this he wrote "they are out in the garden all day with rabbits". The conversation went pretty much downhill from there and ended with him telling me that I knew absolutely nothing. malletheadmalletheadmallethead

I actually did! Along with guineapigwelfare and guinealynx just in the small hope he makes use of them. Doubt it though. It was on a facebook site for people to advertise things they wanted to sell and he has deleted my comment saying I thought it was too small so he obviously knows himself. Just went back on to see if anyone has put an offer in and saw this (poor wee guys! They don't even have any hay!):

ewww horrible conditions! poo everywhere - the one on the right is very skinny and looks to have a injury on its back or possibly fungal/mites

Oh lord, it looks so, dirty and disgusting and hideous! Even when my towels are at their worse they look nothing that bad! It just is so sickening!

I've actually just scrolled down the page and seen that he is advertising:

"small petting zoo for rent for few hours lamb rabbit puppy guinea pigs and soon babby rabbits snakes dragons as well all good fun for birthday partys"

:(

I only know his name because I saw him advertising that hutch on facebook. I don't know if the council would be keen to try and contact someone via a social networking site?

Oh, poor little things...How horrible.

I don't think they've been cleaned in a while. But then they poop constantly and that is a very small space. The smaller the space...The quicker it gets dirty but it generally looks...Dirty dirty...Not "It's cleaning day." dirty.
Just like, it's never really been cleaned properly...Kind of dirty...

They look a bit...Thin and uncared for, too.
They just look....Unhealthy.
8...

I thought it was on Gumtree mallethead

No, a facebook page for people to sell things in the local area. I might just email the local council explaining the situation and why I'm concerned. I very much doubt he has the relevant licences and it'll put my mind at rest a bit knowing I've did everything I can. It was bad enough when I thought he was just a bad owner but the fact he has enough animals to have a 'petting zoo' is more than a bit worrying!

Shelley - who's advertising the Piggies? Sorry :red I'm a bit confused, is these piggies the same guy who's selling the hutch?

They don't look in very good condition - under weight and possibly bite or mites on the piggie on the right? No HAY ! mallethead Arrrhhhh.

This picture has made me feel very sad :(

I think their in desperate need of rescuing :(

Yeh, it's the same guy. That's a picture of his guinea pigs inside the hutch I had enquired about.

Poor piggies, I just wish pet shops wouldn't sell hutches this small :(

Me too, drives me insane. The boar i rescued was in a hutch this big with this brother. His brother had died and when they dumped the pig/hutch at mine the bottom was completely caked in dried on poo! I was disgusted. Its too small really. My lone boar is happy in this tho. But i wouldnt think two would be. :(

x.

After reading his local council's website I'm pretty sure that you need some kind of special licence to have a 'petting zoo' so I've emailed their animal services department expressing concern. I've basically asked if they can reassure me that he has the relevant documents/licences etc. as he is advertising this publicly. I've also highlighted his ignorance when it comes to guinea pig and rabbit welfare as well as outlining the pretty awful condition he is keeping 2 guinea pigs in. I'm hoping in light of this they may revoke any licences etc. he may already have been granted. I don't know if they will be able to do anything as I had such limited information and details to give them but I have directed them to the page on which he is advertising this 'petting zoo' as well as where the photos are.

It's not too bad if they actually do get out in a big run during the day. But who knows if that's true even . . .

I very much doubt he's applied for any licenses etc as he sounds like someone out to make a quick buck or two. From what he has said to you it sounds like he knows its too small and wants to sell so he can buy a bigger one for his two otherwise they wouldn't be out in the run all day

Those poor piggies =( That man is a monster, and needs sorting out..

You absolutely do need licences for even a "small petting zoo" If you are open to the public, wether your charging entry fee's or not you need a hell of a lot of licences, and have annual "check ups" from the people who give you the licence. Basically, what I'm trying to say is he will need the same licence and insurance as a zoo. I covered it in a module (management of animal collections) at uni.
