I was looking on shpock and saw an advert selling baby Peruvian guinea pigs, the seller stated she wanted the guinea pigs to go to 5* homes. I was reading down the comments and came across a lady wanting to buy a pair and I looked on her profile just out of curiosity as to what she’d been buying and selling. I noticed that she had got rid of her own guinea pigs saying they “ aren’t bothered with” and she’d given them away for free on there! So I commented to the seller just saying please check out peoples buying and selling history on their profiles, as I had noticed this, and that it is the responsibility of the adult to look after any pets and that they should be the one to drill it into their kids that a pet is for life and basically keep them interested and not dump them off when the kids get bored and the animals aren’t “bothered with”

Another lady commented saying she has 4 daughters and that she had already bought some guinea pigs but because her kids were good at looking after them she’d decided to add to her heard. I think she thought I was meaning her so I commented back saying no I wasn’t meaning her I was meaning this kelly M and told them to look on her profile and that an animal is for life and not until she gets bored and that if she couldn’t be bothered with the last pair she had what makes her think that this time with a pair of Peruvian guinea pigs who need regular grooming, bum baths, and hair cuts will be any different, and is she prepared for this for the next 6-8 years unlike last time. The breeder also commented back saying thank you for my concerns and that she checks out anyone who buys her piggies and she only sells to people with good piggy knowledge.

Hopefully the dodgy buyer, piggy dumper will think twice before getting any more guinea pigs. It makes me so angry that people think guinea pigs are disposable infact any animal is disposable! And has a long hard think before committing to homing any animals again! And dumping them off online where cruel people could pick them up. Do you think I was right to say something about it? I know I don’t really have the rights judge who can have pets and who shouldn’t but I hate to think that people are getting away with this sort of behaviour instead of being called out and couldn’t bare to think of even more pigs being treated like that. And I do think parents should teach their kids that a pet is for life and you can’t get it out of the way when they don’t want to look after it anymore.

Totally agree! I was reading through the rules of adoption on one of the rescue sites today and they had the best words of wisdom:

"Do NOT allow your children to adopt guinea pigs. Adopt them because YOU want to, and let your children help you look after them."
(It's one of the ones that's currently rehoming, I've forgotten which!)

I wish more people would have a long hard think before getting an animal for a child. I wish more people would read that statement from the rescue aswell and actually speak to rescues or wherever they are considering getting the animal from to help them decide if it’s the right pet for them. I was so angry this morning when I saw what the buyer had done with her previous piggies I had to make comment about it. I’m glad the breeder is so picky about where she rehomes the guinea pigs but unfortunately it doesn’t stop idiot buyers going into pet shops. Hopefully she will read my comment and really think about what she’s getting herself into taking more piggies on. :( poor piggies

Pet shops don't do any checks. We bought ours from pets at home in our ignorance *blush* and they asked very few questions. I had already bought 3 books because that's what I do (the only thing they didn't tell me was not to buy from pet shops!), I knew I would be primary carer as I had been previously for my 5 x hamsters (one at a time), but they did not know I was not like that horrible woman! I will always rescue in future I promise!

I got my Eevie Marge from pets at home adoption area in April last year and they did the same, just asked a few questions and said they’d call me in a week or 2 to see how she’s getting on and they never did and I thought that was really bad because they don’t know what happened to her or how she’s getting on. I did have to sign like a contract thing saying I won’t breed her or anything but how do they actually know people don’t, if they never check up. I would definitely go to a rescue next time too as I know how important it is to free up space for them to take on more in need. I would have more respect for petshops if they only had adoption areas where they take in unwanted pets and find loving homes for them and do relevant home checks ect rather than buying them from breeders and treating them as stock.

Weird isn’t it, I was wondering if it’s because I said I already had 6 piggies and wanted her as a friend for honey but then surely they’d still check to see if everything worked out. Maybe it is because we are experienced with piggies but anyone could lie, so I still expect them to call. I kind of wanted to brag about how amazing she is and how much the previous owner is missing out on her lol. She was handed in because the kids got bored apparently, which is partly why I was so angry and had a total rant on shpock in the first place at the lady who got rid of hers because I’ve seen how lovely an animal that “the kids got bored of” actually is and breaks my heart to imagine her down the bottom of the garden alone in the cold probably with a green water bottle, and to think that they could buy more just for them to end up in that situation is just so stupid and cruel.

I bought Velvet and Betsy from P@H and all I did was tell them I'd had piggies in the past. After I had seen them I went home got my indoor cage ready and then took my old small hammie cage in to collect them as I thought it was better for them to be together than be shoved in a tiny pet carrier. P@H only had my word for it that I was going to put them in a larger cage on a temporary basis while I searched for a suitable hutch. I even took a photo on my phone of the cage in case they wanted evidence. They didn't even want to look at it. For all they knew my beautiful Piggies could have spent their lives in that hamster cage.

They really aren’t bothered about the animals they sell, that’s really sad because there are people out there that probably would have kept them in the hamster cage :(

They do though that's the sad thing! Mine are getting a nice shiny new hutch I'm the Spring as the one they have at the mo is rubbish. There is a very small hole in the back at the bottom and the floor is delaminating.
