REECE

As I am still quiet new to piggies I wanted to ask some questions.

I read that it is best to give the piggies wooden hide boxes but I find the boxes get messy very quickly and to get them clean and hygineic isnt very easy.I also think wetting wood even if with a damp cloth is not good on wood in which case cant be good for the piggies.I use the plastic pigloos.Am I just being paranoid, I do have wooden chews in the cage for them to chew on.

hmmm I had more that I wanted to ask last night but have now forgotten. Will ask them as they come to mind.

Hi Reece,

The plastic igloos are fine for the piggies - also you can buy hammocks and cosy fluffy igloos, sheepskin beds - all sorts.

Where in South Africa are you? Do you know Franschoek? We have a holiday home there.....

Helen.

I think that is in cape Town if I am not mistaken.I live on Joburg
Yeah as I build up extra cash i buy extra stuff, cozies and toys and stuff I cant seem to find here so have to order online.Although I am going to England at the end of June so thought I could use the oppurtunity to get some stuff when there

Heard PE is nice, havent actually gone there myself.

What are some good online sites I can shop at?

Also what are some of the more common illnesses that piggies get and their symptoms and home treatments?

For the common illnesses - get 'Piggy Potions' by Peter Guerney (I think I spelt his name right) It is a very very good book, covering a lot of information, so I recomend that one.

For good sites - see mine! (Had to say that!) And I have a link to another really good site on the links page with items made by 'silly fat hen' from ebay. Very good. I don't know how warm it is where you live - fleece beds etc may not be appropriate. Not all sites do items to order, made specially for your needs, but I'm certain she would and I know I do. Enough marketing - sorry. If you can make things yourself then it would be easier and an awful lot cheaper than trying to order from overseas, and I can give you some hints and tips there too.

i am not very good at making anything unless simple. But sometimes find I say I am gonna make something and never get around to it.Thought I may save up and then buy a few things at once so then I wont be paying postage for every little thing. Is your website on your profile? in winter it can be quiet cold...well I find it cold but then our summers are really hot so I would find anything cold lol but I think its nice to put in there if they find it to hot they wont use it will they?

Will look for the book, keen to be prepared for anything, especially after loosing one which I feel could have been prevented

I am sorry to hear you lost a piggie. I still hurt over losing Magenta who had a tooth problem (back molar) that wasn't diagnosed in time. And yes, my site is on my details. Fleece items would be fine in winter then, I really am no good at all at geography!

Hi love another thing i use is either the cardboard boxes from buying wine in dozen or cardboard boxes from copy paper they're both good sizes you can cut them down and the piggies love to chew the sides a bit :))

In the hot weather you have, yes i know it's real steamy, use say the big coke bottle and fill with water till nearly the top and then freeze put in with piggies and they can either cuddle up to them or lick the moisture that comes off, it will also keep their area a bit cooler too.
Winter time i use old sheets etc.. to cover the cage to keep warm :) just remember don't over heat !
