Hi all, thanks for all your help, here we are again, we have decided to get our piggies castrated, we have spoken to our vet previously and they have done many of these procedures, they are experienced with piggies, and we have complete confidence in thier ability, we have a question though, how long do we have to wait after the operation to get them a girlfriend each? and will they pine for guinea pig affection? we have no problem doing whats best for them but can never find some of the answers we need and find some of the information we do find conflicting, thanks again

I left mine a good three months after castration, just to be on the safe side. I also didn't realise that castrating boars don't stop them getting urges.

They need to wait for a minimum of 4 weeks; ideally 6.

If you can keep the boys during that time where they can see/interact with each other, they won't be lonely.

Otherwise, if you can have each of the boys next to their girl before you introduce them properly, they can get to know each other a bit beforehand and will bond a bit quicker.

Are you thinking of getting girls from the RSPCA Walsall? This is your closest rescue, and they have some lovely agouti girls that are looking for a neutered boar to live with.

I have rehomed from there in May and can really recommend them!

Hi,

I have recently had my boys neutered (on 1st June) I waited the full 6 weeks to be sure before I got my girls. I reserved them probably not long after the neutering and the wait felt like forever but was well worth it.

It was the best thing I ever did for my boys as they are now so happy, it has helpt chill them out a lot to the point where george lets me touch him and stroke him in the cage which he never would before.

It obviously carries risks but my were both fine and didn't have any problems.

I don't know what you bed them on now but it is worth buying some cheap fleece if you don't already have some to keep them on for a couple of weeks after the op. They shouldn't be on anything dusty. Also if they normally have hay on the floor it is best to remove that too and place in a hay rack or simular to avoid the hay poking them in their sore bits.

If you have any more questions please feel free to PM me!

Everything I have read thus far on how long after a neuter for a male to be with females says 3 to 4 weeks. I have even heard from someone who ran a guinea pig rescue that they always waited for 3 weeks after castration to put them with intact females and they've never had a problem in all their years of operation. I am going to have my boar neutered as well before I put him with my two sows and intend to wait 4 weeks before putting them together.

Most vets do say four weeks - I was told four weeks by mine! People on forum told me six weeks and I went with that as safer the better in my eyes. It was murder waiting that long as was so excited but I would have never forgiven myself if I had gone against advice on here and they got pregnant!

It's entirely upto you but I wouldn't introduce them an earlier than four weeks!

That's weird, I've heard the three to four weeks recommendation on a different guinea pig forum. I do agree that it would be wiser to ere on the side of caution on something like this.
