Hi all you may remember that i am putting together a new indoor herd with Yorkie my neutered male and my 2 existing indoor girls Calli and Bling and my 2 new rescue Lunkyara girls Tribble and Tibby.

Well at the moment they are all in the same C&C but in their own fenced off sections so that they can get used to each other through the bars (they will all be put together on Friday).

Well i was poking my head in the study when they thought i was not watching and Tibby the black and cream lunk had her bum right up against YorKie's bars and Yorkie was making burring sounds and stamping his back legs up and down. It is really strange seeing Yorkie like this as he has only ever had a male companion called Fudge and i used to spot Fudge chasing Yorkie around the hutch trying to hump him.

I hink this is going to be a great group and i cant wait to get them all together, I will take some photos of their first meeting and post them on here at the weekend.

Can you just let me know if this is ok behaviour.:)

He is just romancing the ladies ;) It's good for him to try and get this behaviour toned down before they meet properly, or he may be a bit too feisty for them. But sounds fine :)

Thats good to know because i weighed them all recently and Yorkie is double the weight of the new lunk girls! He is generally a big softie though so hopefully the girls will be able to keep him at bay x

I would guess that Tibby is in season! She is certainly accepting Yorkie. You may find that because of that she will be not as interested in him when they meet in a few days. Size is not an issue. Every girl whatever size can squirt pee in a boar's face or give him a little kick to tell him off... Hywel is certainly getting plenty of "don't bother me nows"!

Jo's (Cheylesmore ex-rescue's) little Jasper is deaf and near blind and was tiny (and near starved from long term neglect) for his age, but that hasn't stopped him doing all the manly things in the presence of sows or - now that he is neutered - to the sows themselves.

PS: The first time 10 week old baby Telyn had her first (completely over the top) season with the Tribe, Llewelyn was actually as gentle with her as a dominant randy boar can be.

When the chips are down, it is the girls who hold still for long enough for a boar to mate and who in the wild will choose which boar they want to mate with.

so how often do girly pigs come into season then?

Every 15-17 days (roughly every two weeks). The season itself lasts about a day (or two) with the sow being ready to mate for a very few hours at the end of it; until then you get quite a bit of wheeking. But you will notice that the complaining girl is never moving far away from the boy and is doing her best to drive him crazy! The first few seasons with a boar or a new group are usually stronger and can be quite hormonal; but that also helps with the bonding. Things will quieten down quite a bit over time.
