Somebody please help me, I'm freaking out here... UPDATE ON TOBII, PLEASE READ

Brace yourselves, there is a really long story to this..

I got Tobii when he was ten weeks old. I 'adopted' him and his brother, Rocket from one of my dad's workmates. When we got them, they were living in straw, which was a bad impression from the start. I quickly changed them over to hay and woodshavings, and they were fine.

A few weeks later, the boys started sneezing. I knew it was the bedding, and thought they might have dust in their lunks. I asked for a trip to the vet, but my mum wouldn't take me for ages, she thought they could wait

Over the time while we were waiting, a strange crust formed on Tobii's ears. Now she had to take us..

When we finally took him to the vet, the vet said Tobii had a mite infestation. He gave Tobii a dose of Ivermectin but didn't tell us to come back for another. I thought this was very dodgy indeed, and argued with my mother and sister over whether to take him back and get the other one. My mum won, so Tobii stayed at home with Rocket. Over time, Tobii's ears kind of went back to normal, but are still a bit flaky looking. Then his nose started playing up..

(He has recently been the vet since, but this was a different vet. He said some sort of trauma has come to Tobii and his nose and has caused this painful thing to happen. I'm unsure what the trauma is though!)

I think I might now be paying the price. His nose has become very sore and painful looking, and there is a thick layer of dry blood He is not a happy piggy.

Today, I had a go at checking out the problem. I grabbed some:
-Cotton wool sticks
-Savlon Atisceptic Woundwash
-Kitchen roll
-Warm water
-Fluffy towel

I captured Tobii and told my sister to keep tight hold of him, as he wasn't ging to like this. I dipped the cotton sticks in the warm water, and lightly rubbed at the layer of blood. It was dry, but definately blood. I tried again, and again, untill it wasn't so thick. I didn't want to take the scab off completly incase there was something wrong underneath, or a massive cut. I washed his nose in some Savlon and dried him off.

Then I plonked him back into his cage, and after alot of cuddles and carrots, he was his usual self. Then I went out on a bike ride, and left for about an hour.

When I came back, a horrible sight met me. Tobii was fast alseep with his face buried in his hay-rack (no change there then), but had a fresh bleeding cut right underneath his scab. I'm unsure as to what caused it, but I'm hoping it was either Rocket having a hormonal moment or that he had nibbled the bars of the hutch and injured it. I pulled him out from his sleep and started cleaning the wound. He really didn't like it, so I got bitten a few times. It's a good thing piggies are quite gummy, well, they are sort of.

No matter how much I tried, I could not get rid of all the blood. I think I went through a whole roll of kitchen roll just trying! I have actually quarintined Tobii, he is currently living in his carry case. It's not much, but I don't have anything else, not untill we build a new hutch anyhow. The hutch just recently moved outside, only Sunday actually. I'm hoping that there's nothing in my garden that could harm them, but there are a few wasps and a couple of bumble bees. Soon we'll have frogs too, as we have loads of tadpoles this year.

Somebody please help me! I really don't know what to do. My mum has made it very clear that she's not taking him to the vet, and my sister thinks I'm overreacting. Please, am I overeacting? Or is this just me being extremely concerned and worried. Please, anybody help me solve this problem, I don't want to have to let him down, I love him... 8...:08...:08...:08...

P.S. I'm only twelve. I live in Prenton, so if anybody knows of any good vet's I could ask for help, please please tell me!

UPDATE :

Well, checked Tobii again today. He has another cut beneath his two scabs. I fear this may now be mange/mites. My parents still don't believe me when I say he's ill. It's frustrating, very frustrating. I tried ringing the vet today, but I couldn't get through. Any help/advice would be much appreciated. Thankyou.

i don't think you can overact with a pet's health. have you got another adult family member that can help at all?

My dad, but he thinks that Tobii's fine too and I've told him he's not and it always ends ina n argument. I'm sorry, I'm just a bit caught up right now, it's the holidays, I'm supposed to be having fun and I'm sitting here and ten to 11 worrying about my piggy

is there no way you could take him to the vets yourself, or do your parents pay for it?
when i lived at home, if i thought my pigs were poorly my parents usually had the sense to trust my judgement (as i was the one looking after them!)
if your parents pay for it and you can't afford it, can you not try an RSPCA vets? i thought they were free.
i don't think you should let your parents stand in the way of one of your animals which could be ill <3

I pay for it, all they have to do is provide transport and shut up while I'm telling the vet what's wrong.. There is a vet literally just up the road, so I could go myself, It is a long walk, but I live near the main road it is on, so it wouldn't be too hard.

My family never listens to me, they just listen to what the vet says, and that first vet just said everything was fine, they will be better off outdoors and away from people and all the noise and that there was nothing to worry about. My boys prefer noise to quiet (you should hear them squeak for attention), are much happier inside and I think there is a lot to worry about.

Thankyou for the RSPCA tip. If all else fails I could always ring them up, ask to see a vet or even ask for some advice!

if you can walk there i'd definately do it, they can't stop you especially if you pay for it!
book the appointment yourself, and just explain that while you appreciate their opinon, they're your pigs and even if there's nothing wrong you have to get it checked. maybe give them a book or print out explaining how fragile guinea pigs can be and things they're prone to, so they get a better understanding of what would class as a health scare?
good luck =]

Thankyou for all your help!

My parents know how much research I did before getting the boys, my mum especially. I took out all the books in the local library about piggies, and read them all cover to cover. I've know come to the good old internet, as the books cant tell me everything.

I think I'll ring the vet up tommorow. Ask them what they think, and whether they could book me an emergency appointment. If I tell my mum I've booked the appointment, she'll probably have to take me anyway, becuase I can't walk up a main road with a carry case with two piggies inside. All she has to do is drive me there and back. Simple!

Arggh! Just looked at the vet bill from last time, £15 for a consultation. It's a good thing I have twenty..

Once again, thankyou for your help and support, I will keep you updated on Tobii's progress..

Well done you for nagging your parents about your piggie needing treatment. Rather than cleaning his nose with savlon it would be better to use warm salt water. It's always better to be safe rather than sorry :)

Regarding your question about good vets near Prenton. There are a few people on here who live on the Wirral, who may help when they read your post. I am just a bit too far away here. xx

I'm sorry as I really do not know what to suggest other than to book the vets appointment yourself and take your piggy there yourself. I would just like to say though that you sound like a very responsible pet owner xx

I can't suggest a vet as I live in Birmingham, but I do want to say

"Congratulations on being a great guinea owner!" :(|):(|):(|)

So many people would not bother being so concerned about a poorly pig (I know because my 2 babies were rescued & Billy was in such a terrible state with severe mites when they got him at 4 weeks old! grrrr) But to hear someone young be so concerned about their animals and want to do something is fantastic. xx>>>

You are doing a great job & should be very proud of yourself. ;)

My 5 boys, Jerry, Legolas, Pippin, Billy & Bobby are sending hugs & squeaks your way xx>>>x)

I forgot to say, have a look at the "gorgeous guineas" website. They have various creams & lotions available which are fantastic & could help your piggy's skin. You can buy trial sizes of most of the items they sell, at about £1.20. Postage is first or second class recorded - your choice. The best thing is that buy them psoting recorded delivery you get the items very quickly.

You would have to ask your mum & dad about paying for the items but maybe if you pay for them first, they could do it for you? Or talk to the lady at "gorgeous guineas" & see if you could pay by postal order if they won't? I don't know if they will do it, but it is worth asking.

You can leave a message in the contact box or ring them & ask for advice about which is the best cream, if you prefer. Your choice. They are very helpful & I highly recommend them.

Hugs & squeaks again

Aww, thanks! I try my hardest to take care of my pets, I have done since I saw one of my friends pets in distress. She went on holiday and I practicly begged to take care of it. I took it to the vet and when she came back she didn't even notice it was better! I decided something had to be done and told her parents, so they took it off her and gave it away. Poor hamster..

Will do :(|)

I've been looking into volunteer work, and spotted that the Tam O' Shanter farm isn't that far from me, and accepts volunteers from 12 and over. Big work oppurtunity here! It would be my first job, and I'm very excited! I've e-mailed them, and I'm hoping they'll give me a job, it's so boring in the holidays, I'm stuck in the house all day zzz

If anyone knows of any piggy rescues near to me (in prenton) please contact me straight away! :)

Tobii's gotten worse...

Just went outside to check on him, he has a fresh bleeding cut underneath the other two. I really think it might be mange, as Rocket could not do this and Tobii may chew bars but I haven't seen him checw them for ages. I'm going to ring the vet and ask him what he thinks, but I'm still scared! Help me, any advice would be useful. Thankyou.

I'm hope he gets well soon.

I know how horrible it is when they are ill. My dora is sick to shes got vets tomorrow. They couldnt fit her in today. :(

I hope all our piggies get better soon.

:)

I'm glad you booked the appointment, being quite young myself i know how fustrating and upsetting it is when your piggy is in trouble and your parents dont listen to you!. keep us updating on your piggies health x>>x>>:)p:)p
