Linney had a UTI in early September- after two weeks of Baytril it went away and all was fine. Just this morning, I checked on the pigs and found that one of them has noticeable blood in her urine. :( I'm still not sure if it's from Linney or Sundae- I would guess Linney because she's older and has a prior history of UTI, but it looked more like it was where Sundae normally rests, so I can't tell. I did separate them for the afternoon to try to observe, but couldn't see any visible blood from either of them. I don't have the means to test the urine for blood myself (and for some reason the pharmacy doesn't sell the test strips over the counter) so I think I will have to gather a sample from both pigs in the morning, then take both pigs to the vet and let the vet test their urine there to determine who has the infection. Pain in the butt- and I hope it's something that clears with antibiotics again. I'm concerned if it's Linney again she could have stones or something underlying it- or is it common for pigs to get UTIs two or three months apart with no underlying cause? At any rate, if it's Linney again I will probably have her x-rayed as well. The soonest I could get in is tomorrow morning- wish us luck!

UTI's are just very common in piggies, however I would have her checked for crystal formation which is also very common. I wouldn't jump straight to worse case and even if it is stones they are much less dangerous for Sows than boars that being said I would still always recommend an Xray even if it is just to give yourself peace of mind.

Let us know how she gets on. x

Always worth getting the X-ray done as Jo as said for peace of mind and to rule out stones. I would get your vet to culture the urine sample also when their wee is tested and start antibiotics if the X-ray is negative for stones. It may be worth asking your vet for septrin as it is normally more effective for UTI's. You can order some urine testing strips off amazon, we always have some in as 2 of our girls are bladder piggies.
Lots of healing vibes to Linney and Sundae x x

awww poor little one lots of healing vibes from me and the furry brood x

So I trucked two urine samples and two guinea pigs to the vet today- I was not able to tell who the visible blood had come from, so it had to be a group trip. I was prepared for it to be Linney again and for us to do an x-ray and look for underlying issues- but surprise! It is Sundae with the UTI today. Linney's urine was totally clear. So Sundae is now home on two weeks of Baytril and her urine has been sent for a culture (not sure if that will prove anything, as it's not a sterile sample- I had to put her in a Rubbermaid container until she peed and then syringe it all up and put it in an empty Tylenol bottle!) I opted not to do the x-ray this time because it's her first infection and honestly, I blame the bedding- I switched from Carefresh to a cheaper paper bedding in August, and since then have had two UTIs in two different animals. I change it more often than I did the Carefresh because it's not as absorbent, but I'm wondering if the lowered absorbency is leading to more bacterial growth. If either of them gets another infection, we will be doing x-rays and the works on them. The vet did palpate her stomach pretty intensely for stones and didn't feel anything (although I know that's far from definitive.) Fingers crossed that she does well on the Baytril and that changing the bedd

hi all. Just to let you know that my vet has said that he has seen a massive rise in UTI cases in the piggies that he treats. He is not sure of the reasons but we had a discussion about this the other day. He wondered if it was because more people are keeping their pigs indoors now and are able to spot the signs easier
