My guinea pig hasn't been moving much lately and I picked him up and he was wet and stinky (like he had laid in his own mess) nothing too bad though because I clean the cage everyday. But wondering if this is why he hadn't been moving I gave him a bath and now he still hasn't moved and he squeals in pain if I pick him up :( I don't have any income right now so I don't know when I can get him to a vet. I've been hand feeding and giving him his water bottle by hand because he hasn't been able to walk to his food dish. What could be wrong with my baby? :( he's not even a year old. I feel so bad for him I've been crying all night worrying. :(

Hi Patty. If he wet around his back end this could be a bladder/wee problem. He def needs to go to the vets as like you say he seems very poorly. If he cannot even walk to his food bowl he needs some hand feeding by syringe. It is good you are giving him water. If you could mush up some of his food and hand feed that via a 1ml syringe and his water this will stop his gut going into stasis. Piggies this poorly rarely make it hun so I know you haven't got the funds but he must go if there is ANYWAY you can. I don't know where you are in the world but if you look at the vet locator link it will give you vets in your area. Maybe you could ring one and see if they will arrange a payment plan?

I am tagging some very experienced people to help you through this as I am no expert.

@Wiebke

Good luck to you both.

I agree with the above, he really does need vet treatment as soon as possible.

Are you on housing benefit at all? if so you could see the PDSA.

A pig in pain won't eat so he needs pain relief. It sounds to me like it could be a bladder issue for him to be sitting in his wee but he really needs a diagnosis and treatment from a vet.

If you are unable to get him to the vets, please see if there is any rescue near you that could take him so that he can get the vet treatment he needs.

Hi Patty, sorry to hear about your poorly piggy. Can you access a PDSA that's fairly local to you? Sounds like he needs to see someone. Really hope you can get him to see someone. If there isn't a PDSA, could you maybe phone the RSPCA to see if they have any advice or someone who could help? It sounds as though he will need hand/syringe feeding to keep him going. Best of luck.

Good luck Patty, let us know how you get on.

Sending good thoughts to you and your little one.

He has a broken pelvis :( the vet said it could be from him kicking around in his cage he could have twisted the wrong way. We got him pain medications and are going to continue to hand feed him until he has the strength to do so himself again. Thank you all so much for being so helpful and sweet god bless you

I do too! We still have no idea how he broke his pelvis. We've never dropped him or anything of the sort but he would always get very hyper and jump around and my vet said he could have turned the wrong way or hit the side of his cage and injured himself. But he is on pain meds now and is on a road to recovery :) and thank you! I wanted to do whatever I could to get him to the vet after so many of you suggested it. It had to be done for my little guy :)

Well done for getting him to the vets and getting the pain relief for him. Hope he's soon on the mend

Poor boy! Didnt expect that :o well done on being able to get him sorted, he will be on the mend soon. I always worry my pigs might injure themselves in this way by getting overexcited.

I didn't expect that either! But my little guy was always hyper and sprinting around his cage unless he was eating or sleeping. He's also very young so that could be why! I'm not really sure what steps to take to prevent it from happening to your pigs :/ I would just keep a good eye on them! That's what I plan to do from now on so my piggies won't get hurt anymore :)

:wel: to the forum :yahoo:

Ah bless your poor little man, here's some healing vibes for a speedy recovery &hope he learns a lesson from his over exuberance:doh:

its also lovely to hear that you sold some of your belongings to get him sorted at the vets. so many people would not have bothered, thank you for caring about your little mans welfare so much:clap::nod:

Good luck from the girls & i
xx

Thank you guys! :) and thank you gptv for your kind words :)

My location is Hobart Indiana! Thank you for the help :)

I am glad that you could get him the diagnosis, painkillers and help that he needs! Hopefully, he'll recover fairly quickly!

Could you please add your state to your details by clicking on your username on the top bar, then go to personal details and scroll down to location. That way, we can give you the appropriate recommendations straight away and are able to take the particulars of your location into account.

Would it be possible for you to set aside a small amount of money for a vet fund every week, so you can seek vet care whenever needed? Unfortunately, illness and emergency never happen at a convenient time and they generally need addressing quickly. :(

hi Patti, so glad to hear your poorly piggy has seen a vet and been diagnosed. Hopefully with the right meds and some tlc he'll be on the mend. Good luck to you and your little piggy, hope he's better soon :-)

Some good news for everyone! My little guy started walking a tad today :) I didn't let him do too much activity (as the vet advised) I just noticed he had moved to another side of his cage and I hand fed him and he walked a couple steps to my hand :)
