Just got my lil boys up, and noticed that Carter had a cloudy eye, just one mind you, Daniel was fine. It had a bit of crusty residue near it, so i slowly cleared that away. I'm presuming something might be stuck in there, he may have poked himself on a bit of straw, or it's some form of infection. I'm just going to try and wash it now very slowly, when I tried to just get rid of the crusty thing, he was flinching like no tomorrow. He is eating his favourite food still, carrot skins. If it doesn't clear by tomorrow I will go to the vets on my front door step.

guinea pigs shouldnt have straw as they get eye pokes, they just need hay , its possabliy a ulcer which will need vet treatment and they vet will need check to see if anything is still in there x

Just cleaned round his eye with some salt water, do that a few times today to see if it helps, knowing my luck he will be needing the vet. I will be very upset if he goes blind, he's only eight bloody months old! Hopefully though, it may have just been a bit of straw that scratched him up the wrong way and it'll clear.

It could be a hay poke (or straw if he's had straw in there), or something else could have caught the eye. He should go to a vet so they can have a proper look to assess any damage. If it is a hay poke or similar and you catch it early, it can be treated, if it's left, it may end up as needing the eye removed.

Hi,

My Tallulah started like this, just a small area of white within her eye, I took her to the vets and it turned out to be a cataract. Not sure how old she was exactly as we rescued her but she was only young. There is nothing they can do if it is cataracts but Tallulah has had hers for more than a year, (they nearly cover both eyes now) and she gets on fine. The vet said that guinea pigs cope with sight problems very well as they do not have brilliant eyesight anyway.

Good luck at the vets.

if an ulcer is left the eye can shrivel up, ulcers are really painful he will be given some eye drops fucidin probly total cost should be about '£20 including consultantion fee x

Going in at half 3 today, so we shall see. It'll be fun because Carter is afraid of everything new, and old, and familiar, and strange, and anything that moves, loves carrots and brocolli though...

They used some dye in his eye, about 2/3 of it turned green, aka the ulcer. Had a choice, wait a day for some form of antibiotic, or give me Tiacil, chose the Tiacil. Have to give it 3 times a day for 7 days. He does seem happy to be able to get back to his brother, and he's rockin' a new punk green eye ;)

aw hope hes okay...I had this happen to ours once and we took her to the vet blubbering (i was so worried) and the vet told me that I needed to clip her toenails more often, as that was what she thought she had scratched her eye with. It was weeping and crusting around the edges and she could hardly keep her eye open.
She gave me drops for her eye and it came right in a couple of days.
I now clip there toenails once a fortnight...it scared the hell out of me at first, but now I do it without thinking.

Update: the eye is getting much better, and inbetween visiting Speedy (gf's piggy) and lap time for his eye drops, I think he's becoming more confident around humans. He's getting a bit cheeky also, he can see the eye drop coming, and closes his bad eye to try and stop me :3

Going to have to go back, his eye looks like it's getting inflammed, the lower half of his eye is all red and abit gooey, and the other half has started going cloudy again. I didn't use the eye drops yesterday to see if it was that which was making it enflammed, it's just gotten worse.

Update: ulcer is gone which is good, but his bloody eye had a bit of white gooey stuff in it, the eye drops washed it away but it kept coming back. Turns out it is some form of growth common in guinea pigs(?). The eyedrops had nothing to do with it apparantly. So he's being prepped for surgery and the lady vet is going to cut it out. Anybody else had an experience like this?

If you could get the name the vet uses for the condition it will help, we can look it up for future reference then. I've not had a pig with any eye condition that required surgery to fix so it will be useful to have your piggy's condition to add to the forum's collective knowledge.

I've had pigs with fatty eye (pea eye) but it's never been an issue that needed correcting.

Wishing you and your piggy the best of luck and a beautiful fixed eye!

Suzy x

It might be on the bill or whatever, I'll ask and write it down if I cannot find it. So basically small cream coloured growth at the bottom of the eye, you can only see it when you pull the eyelid down. I'll get all details for everybody later.
