Something Wrong With Her Eyes

Help! My guinea pig's eye is all swollen and reddish and foggy-looking. We took her to the vet, but she said she didn't study guinea pigs and doesn't know what's wrong with her. It doesn't look like it's getting worse, but it definitely isn't getting better. She's very lethargic and eats in small bites now.
 
Where abouts in the country are you? You're piggy needs to see an exotic vet ( sooner rather than later) who knows all about guinea pigs. If we know the area of the country you're in we can recommend one.
 
She needs to see a guinea pig vet asap from the sounds of it. I may be wrong but it could well be dental and may be her back teeth :-( but it could be a number of things like a bad hay poke...either way she will need pain meds from a vet alongside treatment.
If you click on the recomended vet locator on the forum and make an appointment asap for her. Sounds like she needs treatment as soon as you can.

We can see your dilemma with regard to a vet, we are tagging a couple of members hopefully they can give you some information, to assist a vet in diagnosis of your piggies eye.. In the meantime can you possibly take a couple of pictures of your piggies condition and post them here..

Hi, Forgot to mention, please ensure that your piggie keeps eating and drinking, worth tempting her with favourite foods.

The picture won't show it too well but compared to her other eye it does not look right.
 
It looks like she has had hay or something in there. Are there any vets which understand guinea pigs there? Could the vet you saw recommend somebody?
 
No, she didn't know anyone who could help. That's one of the problems, we can't find a vet that knows anything about guinea pigs in this country. The places we bought our pigs just sold them and gave tips on how to raise them, but even they don't know whats wrong.
 
That is very difficult for you. She needs eye drops but I do not know how you can get any.

I've been trying to find out what's wrong online and in some similar cases they said her eye had to be removed.
 
If eye pokes are left untreated then in some cases they have to be removed. Where do other people take their guinea pigs when they are sick?
 
I'm the only who has guinea pigs. None of my friends have or know anyone who has or had a cavy. They're not popular pets over here.
 
Hi, sorry for the delay, that does looks like ulceration from a hay poke. The drops that Piggyfan has linked to are what my pigs have been given in the same situation however, they are prescription only. Could you show your vet the link? I have also heard of Tiacil drops being used for eye injuries. I think it is also important though that she is given pain relief as she must be in pain and ideally the vet needs to put a dye in to check for any further damage.

Also if she is not eating you will need to step in with syringe feeding, have you ever syringe fed before?
 
My Emma had a hay poke a few weeks ago that looked exactly the same as your boy.

My vet prescribed Chloramphenicol eye drops 5% and I had to put one drop in several times a day. They are human eye drops and a prescription isn't needed to buy them. I wonder if you have a pharmacy who sells them? I brought mine online but I see you are not in the UK. I can see a small white dot on your boys eye. Emma had that too and it was where the hay had poked her eye.

Emma was prescribed a course of antibiotics as a precaution and metacam which is a pain killer.

As a forum, we do not recommend treating guinea pigs with over the counter products without seeing a vet but I really do think he needs some eye drops ASAP. As others have said, could you not show your vet this thread? Eye injuries can be easily treated and the guinea pig usually makes a full recovery but if left untreated, it can turn serious.

Emma's eye looked awful and looked worse before it got better.

We'll see what we can do. The first step would be finding a proper vet and then finding the right medications. And if that can't be done, we'll have to make due with the vet we already have.

Thank you, Emma is doing fine now.

When you see your vet again, please ask them to thoroughly check the eye for foreign bodies that could be there. The eye is
usually stained with an orange due to do this which will show up any foreign bodies and ulcers / damage to the eye.

I have had 2 GP's who both had eye problems (hay poke ?) they were given fucithalmic eye drops and visco tears liquid gel both fully recovered
within a week
