So my fiance noticed Cali looked a tiny bit smaller. He weighed her, and she had lost 2 ounces. Despite this, she is still eating, drinking, peeing, pooping, running around, and squeaking. I broke down when he told me and literally threw up, I was panicking so bad. We made an appointment for in 2 1/2 hours. What could be wrong with her?

Relax ! 2 ounces isn't an excessive amount. I agree a vet check is a good idea and 2 1/2 hours is reasonable.

2 ounces (around 50g) isn't a weight loss to worry about.

It depends on when she was last weighed as the loss could have been over several days.

Plus you only need to start worrying if it's a constant 50g loss over a period of a few days.

But a vet visit won't harm.

It's good you are going to the vet if you are worried, but like others have said 2 oz isn't a huge weight loss.
Over what time period has she lost the weight?

She was last weighed 3 days ago

Was she weighed at the exact same time of day?

My daughter weighed Ruby once and was hysterical because Ruby had lost 40 grams in 2 days.
I told her to put Ruby on her lap and feed her some fresh.
Then we popped Ruby back in the cage and left her with a huge pile of fresh hay for 30 minutes.
Less than half an hour later she had magically put on 30 grams!

When we are at home a lot the piggies are constantly having their hay topped up, fresh grass cut, etc.
When we are out all day they sleep more and eat less, and this can be a difference of 20 - 40 grams.

If you are worried about weight loss, once you have confirmed she is eating, drinking and popping ok, then weigh daily at the exact same time.
If the loss continues over several days then you have reason for concern.

She was weighed around 4 PM last time and fiance weighed her around 12:30 this time. Just a few minutes ago she started wheeking and I was so happy!

Hey RileyAnn as others have said above that is nothing to worry about. Always weigh at the same time of day to try and keep variables to the minimum. 50g weight loss can easily be a wee just before weighing. With weight loss you are looking for a trend so say losing 40-50g each day for several days.
Piggies weight will fluctuate throughout the day.

Cali i am sure is fine :) so rest easy. Give her a fuss for me.

Thanks. When I was breaking down, this little piece of me started planning her FUNERAL! I'm staying home as I would likely be a complete wreck there and not helpful at all.

UPDATE: I got a call from my fiance. The vet found absolutely nothing wrong with Cali and gave her a very through check up. He said she isn't underweight, but if the weight loss continues, she'll have to have a blood and urine test. We are supposed to collect some urine and weigh her daily.

Find the other thread here ---> Somethings Wrong With Cali!

It was time.

Time for Cali's first weigh in after losing nearly 70 grams (from 2 lbs 6 oz to 2 lbs 3.1 oz)

Me and fiancé were both expecting the worst.

I got the scale turned on and zeroed it out with the old shoebox perfectly centered on top.

Fiancé placed Cali in the scale.

When she stopped moving, we could not believe our eyes.

The scale read 2 lbs, 7 oz.

We thought something was wrong with the reading.

I lifted Cali off and set her back in. 2 lbs, 7 oz.

We changed it to grams. 1105 grams, which we converted to 2 lbs, 7 oz.

We switched it back to lbs, oz. 2 lbs, 7 oz.

We turned off the scale, zeroed it out, and weighed her again. 2 lbs, 7 oz.

Fiancé changed the batteries. 2 lbs, 7 oz.

We used our other scale. 2 lbs, 7 oz.

How in the heck did she gain 4 oz in 24 hours? We are really confused! I've never heard of a piggy gaining weight that fast! We weigh her usually about an hour after veggies.

Hm, it sounds like a lot, but I think it might be a normal gain. What had she eaten between weigh-ins? Dis she have her hay topped up? Cocoa eats all his hay at once, so hsi weight fluctuates a lot. I wouldn't worry though, just keep weighing her and if it's worrying you, a pop to the vet might reassure you.

She's had 3 cups of veggies and lots of hay, pellets, and fresh water.

today I am 2 kg more than yesterday....
why?
because of the pizza eaten yesterday? or because in the last few days I ate wrong and I did not go to the toilet as usual?
:D
What I want to say is that sometimes our gut does not work normally and it is not strange... and sometimes we don't lose any weight, but we only lose water. Of course in a delicate pet as piggies are we can start worrying too much...
and if Cali is a sow, don't forget the action of the hormones. My sows gain and then lose some weight before and after their season days. Was Cali in season? have you noticed few poos those days? have you changed the pellets? (some pellets have flour and starch which absorb the water when arrive into the gut, just like my pizza is doing now on me:roll:...)

Don't worry I'm sure soon enough you'll poop out the pizza :lol!:

Rochester you are worrying too much, panicking and not enjoying your time with Cali. You were told on the last thread that the weight drop (especially as you had weighed at different times of day) was nothing overly concerning unless it was the start of a trend. This thread is proof that it wasn't the start of a downward trend so therefore panicking over nothing.

I've had Cali for what will be 2 years tomorrow and she has always had the same hay and pellets. I don't think she's in season.

Make sure you're weighing her at the same time of day and in the same place, if you don't then you will get inconsistent results like this and isn't worth it.

If you weigh on a different surface that will drastically change results as it will if you randomly weigh her when ever you want.

You really do need to relax and just weigh her once a week as normal. Also please use grams because I have no idea what ounces are when they're at home lol.

Can you kindly stick to one topic per animal as per forum rules. I will merge this with the existing one, that way topics are not springing up everywhere and replies getting lost, thank you.

Our wood stove has a flat top, we weigh her there and about an hour after veggies.
