I have been wanting a guinea pig for awhile now but the only thing keeping me back from getting one is the cost. My moms friend wants me to have her guinea pig (literally all her friends want me to have their pet someone just gave me a hamster) the guinea pig is a male and i understand you have to clean their anal sack and I know how to care for it and everything but how much will it cost to have if weekly? I live in the US and I'm only 13 (well turning 13 on the 15th of this month. I really don't know what to do? I'm allergic to hay but i take medicine so i should be fine. what would you do if you were me i don't know what to do.

Hello and welcome to the forum.

Firstly I think you need to speak with your parents as ultimately the guinea pig will be their main responsibility and the cost of paying for the guinea pig especially in terms of vet bills will be down to them.

To be honest, I think it is unfair of your mums friend to put you in this position BUT if you truly want a guinea pig and your parents are willing to pay for him and his vets bills then you could take him provided you can offer him a loving home.

Would he come with a cage as buying a good cage suitable for a guinea pig can be costly when you first start out. You also need to think about bedding and toys etc.

I should also point out that vets bills can run in to the hundreds. The most I have ever spent on one guinea pig was over £600 (around $900). It is also important to make sure you have access to a vet who specialises in guinea pigs which I know can be difficult in the USA depending on where you live.

I don't mean to put you off regarding the vets bills but it is something to bare in mind as some people underestimate the cost if their guinea pig were to be poorly, need surgery etc.

I spend around £50 plus ($75) a month on my piggies and that includes dry food, fresh vegetables that they get twice a day and hay but I have 3 guinea pigs.

You may also find the threads in this section helpful. May be you could read it with your parents

But if you can provide all of these things and your parents are happy, then go for it. Guinea pigs make wonderful pets.

What does your mom think about it?
She doest care what I do about it but I would have to pay for it most of the time like she would help but not always if that made sense.

No problem. It is good that you are doing your research before making a decision.

Your very responsible for someone who hasn't even turned 13 yet. Most people your age would just get excited at the prospect of having a new pet and jump at the chance. But to give it such thought, consideration and recognising the huge responsibility that will be on you and that you may have to decline the offer if you feel unequipped to care for all his needs is amazing for someone your age. Well done! I'm SO impressed! :tu:

I wanted to let everyone know i have decided to get the guinea pig. I wanted to say thank you for everyones help too it really helped!

@Thea I'm glad you've taken the piggy in then. Please use this forum to read up on piggy care using the home page threads and remember that if your ever worried about anything or have questions you can always ask here for help and support! :)
It would be a good idea to start saving up some money for any future vet bills if possible so you always have something aside should you need it and so you don't feel so worried about an event such as this happening (Fingers crossed you don't!) and you can always seek advise for things like health and illness here too anytime.

lots of luck, I'm sure you'll do a great job! :)

All the best with your new piggy.

If you ever need any advice on anything this forum is amazing for suggestions and support! x
