I'm from the north east and now live in bristol
Ive just freaked myself out by having another research on the do's and donts of foodies for the boys. I thought i was doing ok up until now but after reading a awesome thread on here I'm now realising I'm not doing as well as i thought. Obviously i give them a constant supply of hay and they get there posh pellets but its the veggies ive muddled myself over

So I'm just curious really what do you feed your ginnies ona typical day?

Usually, celery, cucumber, peppers,

Occassionally (2-3-4 times a week), carrots, broccoli, cabbage, lettuce, cherry toms, apple, melon, strawberries grapes, spinach, parsly, radishes, corriander...

I'm sure there is much more but i'm having brain freeze and trying to remember what is in my fridge at the moment :))

Aaa see i was always told to stay away from celery as its stringy and can wrap around thier insides and really cause damage.
Ditto with cucumber but more because of its high water content.

I have been feeding them brocolli and spinach as they love it but ive just realised its high in calcium and too much can cause bladder stones and stuff.
Previously they had just been eating carrots (when i rescued them) which they love but ive read they should e given in moderation also

:s ive worried myself now :{

Don't panic, i chop my celery in half length ways then into tiny chunks, so there is no risk of the strings getting caught around the insides, i have always fed celery.

Spinach is high in calcium so yes feed that in moderation, carrots, high in sugar (i think, so again in moderation) cherry toms and apple are acidic and can cause sores to the mouth, so should be fed in moderation.

Iceburg lettuce is full of nothing, so can cause upset tummies so try to avoid this, but all other forms of lettuce are fine.

no leaks, onions, garlic but that is kind of obvious.

xx

I found this thread quite useful - just to check we aren't poisoning them..

Our shopping list normally includes:

- watercress, spinach & rocket (you can buy it already mixed together in a bag)
- cucumber
- peppers

Maybe once a week:

- a bit of melon (I buy the small packs with cubes)
- a bit of parsley (maybe a few 'strands' each)

We've tried other fruit & veg such as carrots, broccoli, sprouts, cabbage and strawberries, but I think our piggies are a bit fussy.. :p

Spinach, chunks of carrot, runner beans or whatever they are called, little gem lettuce, carrot tops, rocket and most other leafy salad things, little tomatoes, cucumber, bits of apple, bits of orange segments, grapes...flowers and leafs from the garden :))

This isn't like everyday lol. It just depends what is in the fridge at the time.

Thanks toffee. I know to avoid anything from onion family or spicy things like chilli. They enjoy gem lettece but i wasnt sure if that was going to be to much for them. They lived spring greens and savoy cabbage.

Ive just totally freaked myself out though in regards to thier diet. I'm frightened with them coming from such a bad diet I'm going to overwhelm them?

Are grapes OK then, I read somewhere they wernt but can't remember why?

I give mine

[*]Daily[/*]
French Beans
Green/Yellow Pepper
Baby Carrot
Coriander - if we have it

[*]Occasionally[/*]
1/2 Tangerine segment each
Strawberry tops
half a cherry tomato - seeds scraped out

Once you know what veg is ok, then it's up to your piggies really! Mine are really fussy things :p

By the way. Thank you so much for all the extra food tips.

Ive been scouring threads and guinea pig books and i think i just had a overload of information and just needed actual guinea pig slaves to tell me in thier own words. REALLY REALLy appriciate all the help :)

My boys have spring greens/cabbage, carrot, celery and cucumber daily. They also have the apple skins from my sons lunch (he refuses to eat the skin!), and whatever vegetable peelings we have from dinner (brocolli, cauliflower and carrot today). They love spinich, yellow pepper and parsley which they get every so often.

Hope this helps

I tend to feed my girls a couple of leaves of romaine lettuce shredded up, a few large chunks of green/red pepper, a few slices of cucumber and a small chunk of apple. I have to vary everyday to work around what's in the fridge. I tend to not feed them too much vegetables as their poo's become quite soft and they tend to not eat as much pellets and hay if I give them too much veg. It's all about finding a balance.
