Hey all,

First time posting since joining, really - after some lurking.

My partner and I weren't going to get any guinea pigs until after we'd finalised buying a house and moved, however my heart was stolen. At our local pet shop, there was a sweet guinea pig I saw a week ago. It was noticeably older than the baby pigs around them, not fully grown but some weeks older definitely as it was much bigger.
Unlike the other guinea pigs, it's ears were slightly torn/nibbled around the edge. Despite this, it was much friendlier and less skittish.

Cut to yesterday, my partner and I went there again and that guinea pig still hadn't been bought, yet every other one around them had. We asked how old it was and were told, '10 weeks' (Nooo way, as the same staff member said that the new babies they just got in at that moment were 9 weeks old.) We were also told that the guinea pig was female.
Sad, my partner dragged me home.

This morning I woke up and could not think of anything else. So I told my partner, "We're getting that guinea pig." So off we went, and it was still there, much to my glee. (After setting up my massive old cage, so glad I brought it with me when moving out!)
Met a much nicer staff member who estimated the age to be about 12-14 weeks old, and when she picked the guinea pig up for us... Surprise surprise, it was male! So glad that it wasn't with other guinea pigs.

So now we have our little boy! He is currently nameless (most likely name so far is Snufkin.) He is short-haired, black and ginger (black on top, massive ginger stripe around his middle and then a black bottom - also, a little light marking on his chin) and really curious. Other guinea pigs I've had have been terrified when going into their new home, but he has been eating and drinking - and generally exploring and being adorable.

He's temporarily on plain bedding until we go and drive to buy some vet bed, and his cage is looking a little bare but that'll soon be fixed. Can't wait for him to settle so that he can be handled.

Rather large, blurry phone photo until I upload the photos that I've taken with my camera:

awww what i can see is beautiful!

Congratulations anyway, what a nice story, he sounds so nice, cant wait to see more pics x

Hi and welcome!

Congratulations for giving this overlooked boy a good home! I am looking forward to pictures.

It would be great if you considered getting him a boarfriend in the future; ideally by finding a reputable guinea pig rescue near who offers "boar dating", so that your boy can find somepig he really gets on with - the basis of a stable bond! Guinea pigs are herd animals and not really wired to be on their own. You will love the lively interaction, the chat and the fun had by two piggies!

Congratulations on becoming a mummy to a beautiful baby boar (I have two!) and as wiebke commented above, a boar friend is a must...they'll love getting upto mischeif and adventures with one another :))

Cant wait for pigtures :)

Definitely agreed re: getting him a friend - one of my 2 pigs sadly passed away last year & I found a wonderful local rescue who 'borrowed' my pig for a few days and found her a lovely new friend, they get on so well together and give each other the company they need when I'm at work. I spent most of christmas day watching them getting up to mischief exploring my parents' house together. Congrats on getting your lovely boy - sounds like he's going to have a wonderful caring home that was well worth the wait!

Thanks, everyone!

Definitely considering getting him a friend, though not until we move out. Until then, he just needs to be spoilt rotten. ")
