Hi,

so its been a while since I've had to post on here
On checking my lot yesterday i noticed one of my girls had a scab on her side about an inch or so in front of hind leg. She's a rescue piggy and has had a bad past so she's always squeeked when handled, so didn't think too much of it.
Checked again this morning and it seems to have got a bit bigger - though i say bigger, scab itself seems to be the same but area around it (the size of a penny) is bald and a bit inflamed. so i boiled kettle, poured some into a cup let it cool added a tiny bit of salt and using cotton wool gently gave it a clean. whilst dabbing at it she was mouthing my arm so i know it hurts her a bit. I let it dry and then added a tiny bit of sudocreme to it.
I am taking her to the vets but just want ideas on what it could be?
she's also eating, drinking, pooping and peeing fine and is generally bright in herself

She's a chunky Aby and while trying not to stress her anymore then needed i couldn't feel any lumps at all, and i treat them every 4-6 weeks with spot on treatment for mites etc, and always give their hutches full clean out aswel as their toys and hideys

Do you have a photo of the scabbed area?

It sounds to me like it could be something like mange mites. The area you've described sounds like its where shes been scratching a lot rather than the usual area that fungal appears. Although its difficult to tell without a photo.

I'd be leaning towards mites, Especially if she squeaks when you pick her up. Hope the vets goes okay! x

thank you @ayemee , will try and get a picture later. As i said its not unusual for her to squeak as she's such a nervous pig anyway and has taken me best part of year of handling her daily in her cozy and then out of it to get her used to me o she tolerates being held now though her eyes are more often then not wide eyed. Unfortunately its not something rescue advised me about but that was generally a very bad experience.
she's either biting at her side or scratching.
My vets are lovely and only ones side use for my pigs so no doubt she will be fighting fit soon enough x

I also have a girl that squeaks when you lift her, so I know that feeling! Yes sounds to me like shes scratching and biting the area a lot. I'm sure once shes treated she will be healthy in no time! Glad you've got a lovely vet :D x

I agree it sounds like she could have been biting or scratching at it for some reason. See what the vet says but if you could post a picture in the meantime we can have a look.

@helen105281 Heres a pic. Its drying up alot now but I will be taking her to the vets anyway.
The white is sudocreme I put on it last night and pic was before cleaned it this morning

I would say that is fungal but see what the vet thinks. Not all fungal will test positive if a culture is done, only Ringworm tends to show up.

Here is our Ringworm guide in case you need it

Ringworm: Hygiene And Pictures

I find the best treatment for fungal is the oral medication Itrafungol and/or Imaverol dips.

Do you think it is still increasing in size? does the hair come out easily when tugged gently?

fur only comes out where its scabbed over. the scabs themselves are same size except she now has 2 and not 1, the fur loss only lightly increased.

Ok, the scab could be from biting then as fungal tends to spread fairly quickly. See what the vet thinks.

Lovely thank you. Very helpful as always :)
Would kwench lotion be better to use instead of sudocreme....sudocreme not going to be any good if fungal anyway

I wouldnt apply any more creams or lotions until shes seen the vet- just so he can diagnose with seeing it clearly. Bathing with cooled boiled salt water like you where doing certainly wont do any harm x
