My guinea pig has a swollen chapped bottom. Everything else about her is normal, chuffing around, eating and generally looking in good health. She is prone to bumble foot but only a mild form. But her genitals seem to be swollen and have a crusty stuff around them like dried urine and she has an area that looks a bit chapped - split skin. Shes not sexuallyactive.")

Ive watched her in the cage and there doesnt seem to be any sign of her in pain when urinating but i need to watch her a bit more. Would savlon help her?

Any ideas what this could be?

Thanks for your help

Karen

I am thinking some sort of infection if it has causing swelling and discharge. Is there any odour? Does the area feel hot to touch? Is she drinking plenty?
I would say she is probably going to need antibiotics from a vet. Can you get her an appointment in the morning? For now, perhaps boil a kettle and wait for the water to cool. Then you can use this sterile water to bathe the area and remove any discharge which may irritate the skin further. I'd only put a dab of Vaseline on it afterwards, to try and protect the skin until you can get her to a vet. :)

Thanks Tracy. I will bathe it and also see if she is smelly. Do you think Gorgoue Guineas Lavendar and Myrrh Lotion will help I dont have any vascilline (sp?). I dont want to put anything on it that will sting.

To be honest I wouldn't use any lotions and potions at the moment as you don't know what it is. I only thought Vaseline because it is waterproof and it would have stopped the urine stinging the broken area of skin. I am flummoxed as to what it may be, so do you think you can get her to a vet in the morning? If she is eating and drinking and fine in herself, it's not urgent, but better to get it sorted sooner rather than later.

Ive bathdd her little bottom and its very tender. I will get her to the vet. Poor thing has always suffered skin problems ever since we had her. If its not sore skin in bumble foot/sore feet and now her bottom...

Thanks for the advice and hopefully she will be better soon.

Is she white? The reason I ask is that my Sukie (in my avatar) suffers from dry skin and fungal infections. She regularly gets this problem with her genitals and I've found that a little vitamin E oil dabbed on helps a lot. :)

She also gets sore feet, for which I use the Gorgeous Guineas foot stuff (I forget the name!)

Just clean the affected area, trim any hair that is in the way. Do not use Vaseline, it will only attract hay and other debris to the area and potentially make matters worse. If you can keep her on Vet-Bed.

No shes a short haired peruvian. Its interesting what you say. When we bought Fendi she suffered badly with skin problems on her ears and rump. Which we have resolved with GG shampoos and creams. She now constantly has sore feet problems but not bumple foot and we use GG foot cream and i wondered if her feet problems had anything to do with her sore ladies bits! She seems to be a bit better now but has crusty urine around the top part of her bits which i have bathed this evening and put vasciline on - not sure if this was a good thing or not. She seems to be a bit tender but i defo think a wee trip to the vet is in order just to get her checked out. Will take her this week. Ive changed her diet back to mainly lettuce, cucumber, tomatoes, broccolli, peppers and a tiny bit of spinach now and then plus grass so maybe that will help. Thanks for the advice. This forum is excellent.

Hi Karen,

I think it's possible that urine scald would lead to the sore genitals and also make her prone to sore feet and Bumblefoot...has her urine been checked for any abnormal values? Piggie urine is alkaline, but if something's amiss in the urine it might explain why she's got such soreness in the areas that come into contact with the pee.
