Hello,
Two weeks ago we got a pair of rescue piggies, Rosie and Poppy. They both had fairly sore and slightly scabby feet when we got them. They still seem sore. Is there anything I can do to get them better quicker? Why have they got sore in the first place so it doesn't happen again?
Poppy also has a squashed poo/scab/spur (?) on one foot. Is this from getting sore feet?
Thanks for any help you may be able to give.

One of my guineas got sore tough scabby feet last year because she always put her feet up on the bars of her cage to greet me. I treated them with some tea tree cream a couple of times a day and they became soft and lovely in no time.

I have heard some guineas can be allergic to wood shavings, which can take the oils out of their feet, but mine seem to live on shavings ok.

I've only had guineas a few years so am not an expert! - Hopefully some one else can give you more help! x

Hi,

The best product to use for sore feet is Gorgeous Guineas Perfect Paws Ointment which is designed specifically for guineas with sore / dry / cracked feet. It is available here:
Perfect Paws

One reason guineas get sore feet is when they are kept on damp bedding - bedding needs to be replaced regularly so it is nice and dry for your piggy to walk on and sleep on. Shavings are not recommended for bedding as they are very absorbent and can take the natural oils out of your piggies skin, leaving them more prone to infection and skin problems.

Guineas often get spurs on their feet which can be removed by carefully clipping them off. If you have not done this before, I would recommend that you either take your guinea to a guinea-competent vet or ask someone with plenty of experience of guineas to show you how to do it. There is a pigture of a piggy with spurs here. Some piggies seem good at collecting poops on their feet. Soaking the foot in some warm water will soften the poop and you should be able to remove it quite easily.

Good luck and do let us know how you get on.

Yes I agree Perfect Paws is great. Fluffy has bumblefoot which thanks to PP is getting much better. I have also been applying it on the non affected feet and they are now lovely and soft :)
