I noticed yesterday on Winston, our new guinea, that the hair around his grease gland was quite matted and sticky. On closer inspection, the stuff seemed to have a browny-orangy colour - which didn't smell, and didn't seem to bother him when I tried to take it off gently (but the stuff didn't really come out easily). It seems that he has quite an active grease gland and perhaps his previous family didn't know to bath him/clean it so it's caused a bit of a build up.

I gave his bottom a warm bath with shampoo, and it made some difference as clumps of it did come out, but the area was still sticky. I cut away some of the hair around the area which was matted and it doesn't seem to be bothering him, but it does look a little bit sore and I'd like to get some cream that will soothe it for him.

I've been looking at Gorgeous Guineas' range, but I'm not sure which ointment would be best for the area? What would you suggest? Or if there's anything in the shops that I can buy that works just as well?

Fairy liquid is good to clean a boars grease gland, some people use swargefa or something can't mind the correct name but it can be quite harsh and isn't likely to be lying around your kitchen.

awww poor Winston :(
I was lucky in that Sully who had an over active grease gland rolleyes as long as i did butt baths he was fine.......yes i've heard of the swarfega (sp) :{ and heard of fab results :)
Now he's in your capable hands i'm sure you'll sort it out x) I've no experience with the GG products other than what i've heard and i've always heard wonderful reports, i'm sure somebody who's used each one will let you know.
Best of luck with Winston xx>>>xx>>>

Thank you :)

I'd seen the Guinea Lynx link, but was wondering more really on what you can put on the area after the fact to soothe it a bit for him. I don't think it had scabbed over, but it does look a bit tender.

How about GG's Manuka and Neem Shampoo, Aloe Melt and the Super Souffle or Galen's Garden?
