Sore Skin Patch....

Haven has had a bold patch on her right hip/leg for a few weeks. At first i thought poss mites or fungal, so i treated for mites using xeno and then did a fungal "gorgeous guineas makuna and neem" shampoo bath following instructions for the correct time apart.

Well it seemed to clear up and she was left with a bold patch that no longer looked sore, just bold. Well last week I noticed her hip looked sore again and also round her eyes they look like they are possibly boldish... its not noticeable in pics and hard to tell as she has always had a bold bit round her eyes...so now I'm just not sure. But ever since last Thursday i noticed it looked sore again. I did another "georgous guineas" bath as Honor also needed a bath and cut anyway.

But it still looks sore and angry... she is booked into the vets for Friday. I just wondered what it could be...fungal...mites...other? Shes not itchy and not seemingly in pain, although she's on metacam anyway for her hip/arthritis.

Ooh bless her, it does look sore doesn't it. I can't really offer any advice as it sounds like you've covered all obvious bases but hopefully someone will be along to help soon! Good luck xx
 
That does look sore, I think a vet visit is needed for a diagnosis before you try to treat it again. If it is mange mites though, then a course of injections will be more effective and if it is fungal try Imaverol instead. It doesn't look typical of either to me though. Has she got any other hairloss?
 
Could it be she's rubbing it against something and causing the hair to fall out and then the skin to get chafed?

No hair-loss except that one patch...its been bold for a while, but it was just bold "normal" looking skin...(not sore)...its only since last week its been looking "sore" . Its on her bad arthritic leg..could it be she's doing it to herself due to the arthritis? She see's the vet Friday about it, I just thought if I go with an idea I may be slightly more prepared. As mentioned to me it didn't look like either fungal or mites...but am not experienced with skin conditions so am at a loss.
 
I would say if anything it may be mites if she is run down but it could be because she is nibbling at her leg because it is sore. Though the fact that it is a circular patch would fit more with fungal and it does look more like fungal than mites. It is hard to tell without seeing it in the flesh.

That's fine Helen, was just curious really. I'm sure when John see's her Friday he will be able to tell "in the flesh", as you say in pictures it hard to tell.... took me ages to get those two pics as it just dose not come out properly in pictures...
 
If he does diagnose fungal try Imaverol, I know I mention it a lot but it is because it is gentle but effective.
 
Thank you, not great but R came home with Co-Codamol which is helping a bit. Am ok until I move around too much, at least the dizziness has gone though which means I can post on here.
 
am back from the vets. Had to re schedual friday due to work.

He is pretty sure its ringworm. Have a spary to put on twice a day and also he took a skin culture. Bless her. He thinks its where her immune system was at a low due to thyroid op etc.
 
Oh no! Poor thing, and poor you! Time to get on lockdown, hopefully you and Honor won't catch it! X
 
Thanks. Yeh hopefully. Luckily i always wash my hands after cuddling and holding them..but will now wear gloves. vet said keep them together as they may get more stressed seperating again etc. Just keep and eye out for Honor and use meds on honor if needed. Going to clean cage when i get in and boil wash the fleec and cozies etc. lol x
 
What is the sprat you have been given? Did he suggest anything like Itrafungol?
 
can anyone suggest the best cage cleaner to use for the cage? I currently use Beaphar Small Animals Housing Deep Cleaner Disinfectant Spray...but want to know if i should be using a stronger cleaner and if so what is safe?

I am washing all the fleece etc on 60 and using vanish antibacterial wash powder...but want to know what is the best cage cleaner?
 
@helen105281, can i just check is this the correct cage cleaner? and is the correct hand gel?

If so i will bookmark this page and buy them wednesday. There are a number of f10 products and dont want to buy one that isnt correct/ wont work. Thanks x
 
Thanks Helen thats great , luckily nothing wooden in the cage, all plastic/metal or fleece.

Hopefully she will clear up soon, from what i have read it can take a number of weeks. So will be very vigilant with keeping her, the cage and wound clean. I usually do a full clean every 2 days, if this often enough or shall i do a daily full clean from now on? I always change cozies when wet and pick up poo's 1-2 times a day.

Sorry for all the questions, i have never had an animal with a skin condition before. Honor had mites after she lost her 2 cage mates, but that quickly cleared up.
 
I think to keep on top if it ideally you need to change every day. I would also really recommend Imaverol dips in addition to what the vet has prescribed, I only dip once a week when treating fungal, it is no longer necessary to dip every 3 days as used to be the case (all part of Karen from TKCC's research over the years). You can use it topically in between dips though.

Please note that it will look much worse before it gets better.
 
Thanks, yes he did mention it would look worse before better. Thanks so much for your help Helen. Can i buy Imaverol online? Or is it from the vets only? x
 
Thanks Helen, its going to be a big shop on wednesday. I am also hopefully buying a new cage for the girls wednesday as their old cages are falling appart. I am being made redundant from work in a month ..., so buying everything in for the next few months until hopefully get a new job .. x
 
Yes, small animals is fine, this is basically un-branded Imaverol as they can't legally sell it with the name of Imaverol for small animals but they can sell it as Enilconazole.

If you are getting a new cage is it ipossible to wait to use it until the ringworm has gone?

I am so sorry to hear about your job, I really hope you find something else.
 
Thanks, I can wait for a few weeks if you think its best? just the cage doors keep falling off and the top is bowing...but it can last a few more weeks if needed . :)
