Hi,
I'm so worried about my boy Bubbles, when I went to give him his morning veggies today he got all excited as normal, came running over but when he tried to bite into his broccoli he couldn't, he was just mouthing at it, :... , he managed a piece of Romaine lettuce and a few leaves of coriander but really wanted his broccoli, and yet could'nt manage it.

Just back from the vets now and she saw that Bubbles bottom front teeth are broken, she said they look like teeth look after they've been trimmed - a bit pink and uneven. she could see mulched up food at the back of his mouth so could tell that he'd managed to chew it ok once it got into his mouth, she tried to rinse it out with a syringe of water but still couldn't get a really good view of the back teeth, he also didn't really try to chew on the scope she was using which she said was unusual. He had a shot of antibiotic and an anti inflammatory and we have to go back in the morning to see how he's getting on.

I'm not sure how he's broken his teeth, I know he slipped from the top of the ramp in his hutch a few days ago, could he have banged his mouth on the way down? But that was 2 days ago and he seemed fine yesterday...

Has anyone else had any experience of this and what can i do to help Bubbles while his teeth are sore?

I'm very worried!

Oh no poor bubbles, i too am going through dental issues at the moment, my boys back teeth were very slightly overgrown which caused him to stop eating and therefor acting lethargic. But after vet visit last night, he had the back teeth cut back and i have been feeding him softened pellets, i have had to force some into his mouth and he has gladly taken some, but you need to ensure he is eating pellets and hay, even if you have to force feed it will help him in the long run and help keep the guts moving. Did the vet give you any antibiotics to give?

sadly there are so many cases of dental piggies on here right now, however this does provide you with a wealth of info help and tips when reading through them, i'm sure someone very experienced in this field will reply shortly and advise.

Sending vibes for a speedy recovery.

no I wasn't given any antibiotics to bring home, he just had a shot while we were there, the vet is fairly convinced he's not biting his food as his front teeth feel tender, she said there were no obvious signs of infection and everything else looked o. She did give me a syringe so I can try to ensure he gets water and a bit if blended up veg later if he's still not happy to eat for himself.

I'm new to the world of guinea pigs and am so worried, only had my boys for 1month so this is a baptism of fire!

I hope your piggies feel better soon too, I've been reading all about other peoples dental issues and am picking up some useful tips.

Fingers crossed Bubbles starts eating again soon!

Did they show you how to syringe water? I dont mean to scare or worry you anymore than you are already but you need to be very careful with it as if you do it to quickly or put the syringe in too far they can inhale the water into their lungs, so just put the tip just in the mouth behind the front teeth and do it a little at a time. Try mashing some pellets up with some water and syringe this also, again carefully, he will need the fibre to keep the gut moving.

Syringing isn't very easy especially to people not used to it, you may find it easier to wrap him in a towel, some helpful links

Monitor poops too to ensure they are normal.

thank you so much for the advice.
I've just been sat with bubbles and he was eating some hay! I also grated him a little carrot and cucumber and he wolfed it down, I think he feels fine in himself just has sore front teeth.
Will keep a very close eye on him over the next few days, as long as he keeps eating the hay and the veg I'm not too concerned about getting the pellets down him (is that ok or not?)

You need to keep his vitamin c levels up which is contained in dry food, and vegies such as broccoli, cabbage, sprouts, de-seeded bell peppers to name a few off the top of my head. also the fibre from the food will help the gut, usually when piggies are sick and not eating it on their own its advised to syringe feed mashed pellets, try feeding softened ones to him and see if he will take them. Weigh him daily to monitor his weight loss/gain.

how's your little man doing today? was just reading your thread, hope he's on the mend x

I just copied this from my thread:

"Well i had him out last night and had to force 2 or 3 soft nuggets then he happily took them for a while and was eating hay when i put him back, he is still taking a while to eat, we gave him some celery leaves and it took a while to eat and it was as if he was either stuggling to digest it or it got stuck on the roof of his mouth as he was pulling some funny faces lol. he was very quiet last night but it was a very stressful evening for him bless him. i left some soft nuggets in the cage for him overnight and they have gone down, but the girls could have helped with that although OH said when he got up at 5 this morning that he was sitting at the dish eating them and eating some carrot.

I gave him 0.3 ml's of baytril this morning which wasn't too much of a stuggle but he clearly hated the taste so tucked into some banana afterwards. Also gave hima small peice of soft bread which he was unsure of.

But i left them with dry and soft dry food, loads of hay in rack ad scattered on floor, a small dish of fresh food inc the rest of the banana. OH will be home just before 2 to watch him."

I am at work at the moment so no more updates sadly, OH will be home soon and i will ring to see how he is.

xx
