We've got 4 female guinea pigs and a female rabbit. Some of the poor developed poor conditioning of their fur a few weeks back. We treated them all for mites and this rectified the problem in all apart from Simba. While all the other pigs are in perfect health Simba's fur became crusty to the point that it impeded her walking on her back legs. I bought some teatree cream which I have been applying twice daily and I have bathed her every other day. She had lost fur on her underbelly and it was very dry and painful looking. The treatment has worked and her coat is far better and her stomach is no longer dried out. Having sorted that out I then noticed that overnight she had a sore on her back that looked bright red and open. I gave a further mite treatment and I have put some cream on the wound. It has started to dry out and heal but there now appear to be similar blood red areas under her fur around her head and places she could not self-inflict. I do not know what this is or what to do about it. Does anybody have any idea what this could be? Any advice is very welcome. Many thanks

Hello and welcome to the forum. Please can you add up your location as it helps us to tailor advice as we have members from around the world.

I'm no expert but is it possible that these are bites. Do all 4 piggies and the rabbit live together? Have they always been together or have you recently changed their arrangements and could she be being picked on?

Did the treatment come from a vets or was it off the shelf of a pet store? If not prescribed by a vet it may not have been the correct strength.

I think it may be best to have Simba seen by a vet to identify the cause.

Here is a photo of the wound on her side. They do all live together, indoors. We took simba and her sister on about 6 months ago. She does seem to be the loner of the group now. At times she sits on her own and at times she is part of the huddle.

Poor love, that looks big and sore. I can't identify the cause from the photo (and it would be wrong for me to do so). I think it would be for the best to separate her from the others and get her checked by a vet.

As a forum we don't recommend keeping rabbits and piggies together as they are different species and rabbits can inflict injuries and pass life threatening bacteria to piggies (in their poos).

Due to the size of the wound i would say its more likely an injury. Seperate her until she sees a vet where they can give you a diagnosis. Regardless of the cause, she needs veterinary attention as any open wounds can become infected, as well as painful.
