Hi sorry for all questions I’m posting, sure it’s because it’s our first piggies & first week & so much you need to know you can’t find in a book! Lol
Firstly.. I have a corner litter tray filled with hay with little corner forest over it, one of my piggies love it and poop, wee & eat out of it tons , have read a lot of people put something underneath the hay in it Like s puppy pad or newspaper or something but won’t the piggies try & chew this? Is newspaper safe for them to chew, guessing puppy pads def not.

What does Everyone use to clean their food bowls & bottles out? I have just been using very hot water with no fairy liquid or anything is this right?

Lastly I’m putting out veggies morning & night, the piggies will eat yellow pepper anytime of day but seem to only eat other veggies at night.. is this normal?

Think that’s it for now, Thanks so much for all your support x

What does Everyone use to clean their food bowls & bottles out? I have just been using very hot water with no fairy liquid or anything is this right? I use Johnson’s clean n safe but heard diluted white vinegar or F10 works out cheaper. Fleece on a 60 wash with non bio, no softener! Water bottle just hot water at the moment as it’s not smelly or dirty!

Lastly I’m putting out veggies morning & night, the piggies will eat yellow pepper anytime of day but seem to only eat other veggies at night.. is this normal? No idea but as long as they’re eating something I wouldn’t worry. Hay is there main diet so plenty of that!

Sorry can’t edit my post now! The disinfectant is for the cage! The food bowls and water bottle isn’t dirty but if they need a wash then a tiny spot of fairy and hot water, well rinsed.I just wipe with kitchen roll for now.

I line my hutch with newspaper and pop loads of hay on the top and my lot they never touch the paper although I believe other members have paper chewers. When Christian was in the hospital cage following his life saving op 2 weeks ago, I put puppy pads in for the 6 days he was in there and he didn't chew those either. Hope this helps!

Thank you for all your reply’s, I’m using the Johnson’s clean & safe spray too, tge kbe you spray on leave for 15 mins then wipe off? looks like will last quite a while so more than happy to pay out for that 👍 and glad hot water ok for bowls etc. Might change piggies over to just giving veg in evening if they keep leaving in day , they seem to eat it once we are all in bed so maybe it’s just were they are young and nervous when us giants walking about x

We have newspaper, then woodshavings, then hay in our cage, and in our hutch, and woodshavings in the toilet tray. If we dont put woodshavings over the newspaper to weight it down then Piggle tunnels under the newspaper and eats the bits of paper she's peed on... we have hay on the floor, hay as bedding in the nest box, then recently we introduced a hay rack to put the better quality eating hay in. After a clean out I pile the hay at one end of the floor and the piggies like to arrange it themselves, rearranging the cage and peeing on everything I've just cleaned makes them very happy!

Thank you, one of ours has already started chewing the wooden bridge & the wooden house so think she might be a chewer! Lol xx

Please ask away.
I learn a lot from other people’s questions so you are helping others too.
I use a thick layer of wood shavings and lots of hay in the cage. The girls spread the hay all around the cage.
They happily wee and poop indiscriminately.
I do use washing up liquid to clean the food bowls but make sure they’re well rinsed in hot water.
I use a non bio washing powder for the fleece tunnels.
Mine also gnaw at the wooden hideys.

A good trick for cleaning inside water bottles (both human and guinea pig!) is using steradent denture cleaning tablets. They fizz away and lift off any residue so you dont need to scrub with a brush and scratch the plastic which could lead to more bacteria build up. Rinse thoroughly with hot water afterwards. Sterilises really well and leaves no smell or taste as its designed for stuff that goes in human mouths obviously!

I put the water bottles in a solution of Milton every couple of weeks. I do rinse them out afterwards even though it says on the packet that this is not necessary.
