Just curious, for those of you who have several piggies....how do you source enough veg year-round for them without having a farm or going bankrupt? :lol!:

I know about sources to buy good, affordable bedding and know that pellets and hay can be bought in bulk as well, but veg could easily be very expensive with more than a pair or trio of pigs and I know some members on here have guinea pigs in double-figures. :)

I always look in the reduced section in the supermarket - herbs/ lettuce often perfectly fine but reduced - go at the end of the day, or last thing on a Sunday perhaps. Supermarkets have to throw away so much perfectly good food, it's such a waste! Other than that, Lidl/Aldi often have very cheap deals on fruit and veg etc. :)

Lol, yes it can be pricey with the amount of veg my pigs get through.I'm lucky in that I have a family friend who also buys the piggies veg when I don't have time to go shopping to get any and that helps save me money. Also it's worth going to places like Tesco from about 8 o'clock onwards as they reduce their veg quite a bit.I am also growing some herbs but they seem to be taking forever to grow lol.

Also my mum sometimes asks the market man for anything he's chucking away like cabbage leaves etc.
My town has a twice weekly market and I do this. I've generally had the best results if I go about 30-45mins before packing up time, at about the time when prices get reduced to flog the last bits of the day.

Reduced section is my friend! I also grow quite a lot myself like herbs, lettuce, even an apple and hazel tree now! Oh, and weeds GALORE! And grass of course :D

I'd like to grow more but I just don't have the time, it's fairly easy though. I'll probably do tomatoes soon too as they're so very easy.

I've got tomato plants and apple trees (and I think a little hazel sapling, too!). :)

But I don't have a lot of growing space to grow my own plants, at least not enough to supply the piggies with much and then there's still winter to think about.

Make friends with people who have allotments ;) Our boys go nuts for beetroot leaves :D
