Hi I am not sure to get a sow for my 1 year old male guinea pig or get another male :-\. However he recently had a big fight with one of my other male guinea pigs and seems not to get along with other males. Is there any chance he will get along with a female younger or as the same age as him.

Trouble is, if you want to get him a friend of the opposite sex then you will either need to get him neutered or get him a spayed sow. Now a spayed sow will be hard to come by, there is a rescue in Rugby that spay them but don't know where about you are from?

As for getting your boy neutered, well you will need to find a vet experienced in performing this operation on guineas. There is a slight risk with the anesthetic but also risk of the piggie having a prolapse. Many people on here have had many boars done with no problems what so ever but it depends if you are prepared to take the risk with your boy.

I posted on your other topic just now explaining that it is possible for two adult boars to get along & a rescue will help find a pal for your boy. I know you had problems in the past but this could be because the two of them were just not compatible personality wise, it doesn't mean your boy won't get along with another with a different personality.

Good luck with your decsion O0

Thanks for all your help however I don't live near any guinea pigs for adoptions only cats and dogs so my only option is go to the pet store and hopefully find a female.

If you do this, you will need to get the boy neutered first, otherwise you could end up with numerous babies. After neutering you have to wait a few weeks before putting the boar with a female.

I do not agree with neutering as it is putting a healthy animal through the risk of future ill health or even death.

It would be best to get another boy.It is a shame there is no rescue near you because you could take your boy along and they would find a compatable pig.

Have a look at Barmy 4 Boars there is good advise on there about pairing boars.

I agree with maryh, I wouldn't get him neutered either. I'm in similar situation, my piggie was living with his brother until they fought and my piggie was hurt badly so they had to be seperated. We got him just as he was finishing his antibioitcs for the bite wounds.

I looked into all the options, the nearest rescue centre to me doesn't have boars at the moment and the next one closest is 80 odd miles away and I just wasn't prepared to drive that distance (I just recently passed my driving test asnd I'm not the most confident of drivers) I couldn't bear to have him neutered after I read about it online and didn't feel I was prepared enough to look after him post op.

So we went to the petshop and bought a boar. We have them seperated at the moment, to make sure Bob doesn't have any bugs etc and will try them together. If they don't get along then I'm having them live side by side (in same cage but seperated) I will follow the instructions on barmy4boars and no doubt ask loads of questions on here.

It is hard to decide what to do, don't rush into anything. It's taken me a good month to think everything through and decide on what to do and even now I have Bob I'm still living on tenderhooks hoping that everything will be ok.

Good luck on deciding what you are going to do :)

My piggie Brandy hated all male piggies until my mum bought Buttons one day. We didn't really want to put them together incase Brandy attacked him but he loved him so much and he stil does. It's just trying to find a piggie that he will get along with. Was just luck with Buttons I think.

I had my boar neutered but can understand why people would decide against it. I was very confident with my vet and thankfully nothing went wrong and he recovered well.

I know when I was considering my options I looks at the cons on both sides. With neutering there is always the risk of surgery and with boar bonding I suppose you have to decide whther they could live separately if things didn't work out.

I really hope everything works out for you and that your piggy finds a friend.
