sow passing blood, has anyone had this before.

I have come home to find that my four year old sow, Rosie, has passed blood with bits of white mucus in also. Has anyone ever experienced this before, what could it be? She is bright enough and appears to be behaving normally, eating, drinking etc, but I have never had this happen before and it quite shocked me to see blood on the vetbed. I have cleaned her up and will keep an eye on her, but not sure of what this can be.:(
 
hi i would take rosie to the vets as i have been this morning with my guinea pig ruby as she was passing blood in her urine and she has cystitus sorry about spelling she too is her normal self otherwise vet has prescribed her some septrin twice a day for seven days rosie maynot have the same thing but it is worth getting her checked out
 
It could be cystitis/urinary tract infection. Make sure that she drinks plenty. Syringe her unsweetened cranberry juice (if necessary mixed with water), as much as she'll take. You can get Ocean Wave light in supermarkets.

Best take her to the vets. If you can, please have an x-ray done (NO general anaesthesia necessary, wrapping a piggy in a towel works fine) to exclude the chance of bladder stones as the cause of the bleeding.

Please ask for pedieatric septrin (0.5 ml twice daily). It is the one form of bactrim that can be given orally and has a banana flavour, so goes down a lot better with piggies AND their guts. If your vet is of the old-fashioned school, 0.4 ml twice daile is the dose for an adult piggy. Insist on a painkiller and probiotics with your antibiotic.

The other cause for bleeding could be that there is something wrong with her womb.
 
You have received some great advice already, only thing I can add is to ensure she is drinking well; bladder problems can be eased in some cases by a healthy water intake, which well help to flush the bladder out.

An anti-inflammatory is ideal to go with the Septrin, as cystitis can involve inflammation of the bladder or urethra, which is what leads to the pain often associated with the condition. A reproductive problem is still possible, as Wiebke mentions; cystitis is simply more common!

She has passed no more blood since yesterday, I have some septrin left from a previous visit to the vets, so I will try her on this for a week. I will be making an appointment if she passes anymore. I have one problem though, cavy savy vets seem in short supply around here and the vet I have seen in the passed has moved on, she is hoping to set up her own practice, which I hope is very soon. Thanks for your support, I will keep you posted.
 
Everyone has assumed that the blood/mucous discharge is from the urinary tract.
Is it from there or from the reproductive system or from the digestive system?

Both Wiebke and myself have suggested it's possible that it's reproductive. True that I never thought of digestive.
 
You would not usually expect to get mucous from the urinary tract, assuming that the "white bits" are, indeed, mucous.
 
I have put Rosie on some septin, from a recent vet visit, she appears to have only passed the blood that once, she is bright in herself and shows no signs of illness, so I am going to keep a close eye on her and just carry on with the septrin until Monday. I thought it looked as though it may be from the reproductive tract or digestive system, she has no change in appetite, so I will monitor her for a while longer. Thanks for your comments.x>>
