Hello,

I've recently brought two sow sisters home, they've been here for only three days and they are 10 weeks old.

They seem to get along sometimes, they sleep cuddled together under the same hides even though there are two, however trixie who I think is trying to be dominant keeps chasing and lunging at Luna, this usually subsides, unless veggies are involved and then just tonight trixie chased Luna into a corner, so Luna raised her head and started chattering her teeth, should I be worried? I've never had guinea pigs before and I'm a big softie so this is worrying me!

Thanks!

Hi and welcome!

Your girls are currently right in the middle of establishing their hierarchy, which is right at the heart of any guinea pig group, however small. This behaviour is called dominance behaviour and can last around two weeks, but it should calm down with every passing day. It also can flare up whenever one of the girls comes into season. The underpiggy Luna doesn't like to be cornered, so she is telling Trixie that she isn't finding this funny.

You may find these guides here helpful in understanding what is going on:
Illustrated Bonding / Dominance Behaviours And Dynamics
Sow Behaviour

You may also find our information bundle for new owners helpful. it is hopefully going to answer many of the questions that you have along the way: New Owners' " How To" Starter Kit

Since we have got members from all over the world, we find it helpful if you please added your country, state/province or UK county to your details, so we can always tailor any advice to what is available or doable where you are straight away. Hello and welcome. Wiebke has given you the very best advice and links to read. This is normal behaviour for your girls who are working out who is boss. In every successful pair one is the alpha sow and one is the under sow. But seasons can upset the balance in the relationship and cause lots of chasing, nipping and squealing. Once you have read the links you will have a greater understanding of what your girls are up to in their cage.
