next_croc-hunter?

Hi I'm liam and I'm 14 i live in middlesbrough england (Near North Yorkshire),

My question is pretty simple and please only answer if you have real genuin knowlage on this matter (i.e. You are a experianced piggie owner or have had both sexes of pigs) the question is whats a better cavy for the begginer a Sow or a boar.

PS. i am adopting a pig from a rescue center as this is recomended by most users of this site.

Thanks all answers are appreciated O0
Liam

It really doesnt matter if youre only getting one but why are you only getting one :o ?! They pine terribly and get really miserable, they can even stop eating and starve :(. Hopefully I've convinced you to get two :), and if so,females are better-males can fight unless raised together from birth.

Sorry I'm gettin two i must have accidentaly left that out 98) i do know they are pack animals

I'd recommend females, there's a chance two girls will fight but it's less likely than two boys x

My girls fight over food :P but thats just because theyre greedy. Plus they dont bite or stratch, just tow eachother across the cage, then run quickly back to the food! :D

My girls do that to. Fleur squeaks so loud at Flora over the food. They had a barny earlier, just loud squeaks and then they sulked off into the corner of their hutch!

I'll alway be a boar shipper, my three are full of fun and do get on but I'm lucky. I would say girls too but only because of the fighting reason although it is possible to get two boars that will be fine with one another.

Still, theirs a chance you'll get a pair that dont get on.
I've seen what boys can do to each other, and its not pretty.
Human and Cavy (:))

My first two piggies, and the only piggies I've ever had are boars and they're great - okay so they have fell out before, lived in a split c&c cage, but after introing them properly again they live happily together. I guess the easy option is girls because they're less likely to fall out, but that doesn't mean they wont! It just depends on the piggies and their personality. Don't be put off boars, they're great and some get along really well...

Maybe you should just go along to the rescue looking for a pair of piggies, and then whatever sex they are doesn't really matter. I was told my piggies were sows when I got them but turned out to be boars ;) (they were from the free ads btw)

I also recommend girls for a first time cavy owner, as has been said. If you get your piggies from a rescue, 9 times out of 10 the sows will already be bonded so you shouldnt have any problems at all. Could I also add that shorthaired piggies would be a better option for you as long haired piggies require a lot of attention...much more grooming, hair trimming, baths etc :)

Thanks guys and gals ;) That really helps me alot O0 I think i might just get a pair that are toghther in the center regardless of the sex :)

Thanks alll for your input :)

Liam

Also like to mention that rescues normally neuter their boars and bond them with a female, so you have that option too...one of each!

Thats even better it will make it more natural for them i will definatly ask about neutered males with sows that would be great best of both worlds eh? O0

Thanks so much lavenderjade that is really usefull info. thanks alot O0

I have 2 Guinea pigs, called Jamie and Oliver, and Jamie keeps jumping on top of Oliver, and their both boys. And Jamie is really big,a dn my mum thinks he's pregnant :

Hiya,

Are you sure they are both boys? He can't be pregnant if he is a male ;)

Where do you live? I really think you need to get someone to check the sexes for you..especially seeing as they're from PAH ;) Pets at home often sex their animals wrongly and you don't want to breeding your piggies.

One of each is definitely the way to go. The two sexes have diffrent attitudes and sets of noises and you would be missing out to choose one or the other. With males there is always the risk that they will fight, and with females one is likely to be dominant and be very nce to the other. With a mixed pair the male always adores his girly pig and tells her how lovely she is every day:) He will usually let her be boss too, although he may forget that somtimes when faced with a cucumber as lovely as she is an attmpt to pignap t from under her nose;)

Jamie (Mu guinea pig) is just so fat. He loves chocolate drops, (From pets @ home) and apple.

Those chocolate drops from PAH are really unhealthy and should never be fed. If you want to give them a treat give them a bit of fruit or some extra veggies ;)

;D ;D ;D

We have five sows who get along brilliantly together, there have never been any scraps from day 1, although the new ones (who have ben itnroduced mostly separately except the twins) have always been babies when introduced so that has probably helped.

Glad you're getting two, Liam, have fun with them x

Ive heard that boes settle in faster ,, I think it's true because My patcy settled in a day after we got him ! my aunties sow took weeks to settle in x

Could be something in that Patchy, I have three Boars and they settled in within a few days and would take veggies. My two girls well I've had them a week now and they still hide from me and won't take veggies but its better than it was.

:)

if you are goingto a rescue, a pair will be bonded and regardless of sex shud get on , i have found no difference in boars/sows it all depends on how they have been put together , for a beginner a bonded pair are ideal, i have bonded up many pairs & not had a problem, and sows can be bossy and nasty as boars belive me ! ::)

alot of people have said that sows get hormonal and can fight just as much, bit like is women ;D

I have a boar (his mate died :'() they got on okay but archie seems happier on his own - prob as he gets all the food now

good luck with your new pets and good on you for getting them from a rescue too O0

I second that! My girls always get bossy and moody with eachother!
