Sow with mucous from genitals

To be honest, now you know they are there I would go for the surgery. They may not get worse until she is much older and a young, otherwise healthy piggy has a much better chance of surviving surgery. However there are also injections for cysts that they can give which might help in the short term

How likely is it she could live her entire life without them affecting her physically if a neutered male could calm her down

Please don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying you should have surgery or that you shouldn’t. But I am mystified by the vets response of no treatment and the suggestion of getting a neutered boar. I’m sorry not sure exactly how a neutered boar is meant to calm her down. If her ovaries are making her permanently rumble and aggressive then that will persist irrespective of who she lives with.

Once the ovaries are removed there are no further issues with behaviour caused by hormone imbalance, hair loss, nipple leakage etc associated with ovarian problems. You also avoid any potential issues of ovarian cysts bursting (life or death emergency) and pain issues if cysts start growing and putting pressure on other organs. It’s an easier recovery in a young fit sow than an older one.

If she had surgery (or treatment - see below) you could reintroduce her to the others on neutral territory and it’s likely they would accept her back unless they are very resentful of her recent behaviour.

The alternatives to surgery are to try the hormone injections (some members have had good response) or to do nothing and accept that her behaviour is not going to change. I’d be wary of bringing another piggy into the mix if you aren’t going to try treating her symptoms.

I'm going to call and speak to them tomorrow or Friday, we haven't officially diagnosed with an x ray or ultrasound but they were pretty confident it was hormonal, she's had to have the cage moved downstairs yesterday as she was teeth chattering through the bars and reintroduction isn't happening she won't tolerate the others at all🤦‍♀️she had more discharge today too if we need to do the xray etc first then we will go ahead with that but if the chances are its hormonal even if its not cysts then i think we will go ahead and spay her while she's young as its a permenant solution. The vet said the hormone injection is very dangerous, and yes she is an exotics vet with plenty of piggy experience and has always been great with us, I trust them fully 😊

Elective surgery is always the hardest decision to make but if she isn't going to tolerate anyone in her current condition then it would be a lonely life for her. Hoping it all goes well

Thankyou I'll take a read now, super nervous! But hopefully she'll be happier without the hormones and back with her friends soon! 💖

I’m sure she will. We will all be thinking of you tomorrow.

Good luck at the vets tomorrow,
I think I'd be inclined to have her spayed too if she was mine. If she's young, fit & healthy otherwise it greatly reduces the operation risks :)
As long as you're 100% happy with your vet & that they're competent, confident & experienced with this operation it'll make it less risky still.

My Ellie was about 6yrs old &the vet said too old for a spay when she was diagnosed with ovarian cysts, she had the HCG injections & they worked brilliantly for her, they lasted 12months & then had another lot aged 7yrs she became far more relaxed afterwards.
But at least with a spay the hormone issues will be sorted once&for all :tu:

Take a little packed lunch for her for when she comes round, a few favourite veggies, cucumber , grass & a small /carrier bag of hay.
It'll help her with recovering

Let us know how u get on.
Full & speedy recovery vibes coming your way xx

Shes home, she's taken 1ml from a syringe so far but nothing by herself yet, the op went really well and she's been really well behaved bless her, I think they said there were no cysts found, hopefully spaying her will have still helped the hormonal behaviour or I'm going to feel terrible for putting her through this.

Good to hear she’s home. The anaesthetic and pain relief zonk them out a bit. Just keep offering little and often syringe feeds and a bit of herb or treat to try to tempt her to eat for herself.

Thankyou for the well wishes, I'll feel better when she eats something, she isn't interested in her fave veg yet or even hay, syringe feeding is hard as shes not really interested in that either I'm going to try mushing her normal pellets incase she just doesn't like the recovery food now, she's done one poop 💩 so that's something at least 😊

Shes still not eating great, the tiniest munch on hay and the tiniest bit of romaine lettuce, sshes had about 5ml total syringe feed since we picked her up at 4:15pm yesterday which she fights against, she has weed and she's done about 10 poop pellets which I'm taking as positive, will just feel better when she eats properly, she's groomed herself and her wound doesn't look too sore or angry 💖 come on little fluffy eat something 😩

Wee and poop output are good, but you do need to keep the guts moving. Has she got pain relief for you to give to her? I’d give her a bowl of mushed up pellets if she’s fighting the syringe. Or try making a feeding solution with her pellets if she’s not enjoying the recovery feed. Mine hate critical care but will eat mushed pellets or Emeraid from a syringe. You can also give a bit of puréed baby food mixed in (I use Ella’s kitchen but check that the contents are all veg and fruit suitable for piggies). If you mix it into mushed pellets it can sometimes tempt them. It’s still early days.

Yes she has metacam and she's been back to the vet for a pain relief injection this morning, I've been syringing mushed pellets. As the bowl isn't tempting herr and ivee managed to syringe some baby food too 😊 xx

You’re doing all you can. Was it a full spay she had? Ie one big incision underneath? If so that is a big op and they do take a little while to recover.

The relief when there's a pile of poops after only doing a few previously! She's now eating a little veg by herself and taking syringe fed pellets mixed with a tiny bit of baby food better shes up to taking 2-3ml every couple of hours ☺️ come on fluffy, we got this 💖 poops are a little soft and mishaped but hopefully we are getting there 💖 shes also walking a little now and not just sat in a corner 😊

So much positivity in your post. Everything you’ve said shows she’s making little steps towards good health again. Is she on her own? If she is, then is there any way she can be next to or close to her companions?

Yes a full spay with the big underneath incision 😰💖 she's eaten a little fresh grass

Keep syringe feeding her and give her time to recover and heal. Keep up the painkillers until she is eating fully again.
Here are our post-op care tips: Tips For Post-operative Care

Please manage the top up amount by weighing daily at the same time. It is a VERY good sign that she is eating; offering grass and fresh herb is often the thing that goes down best when a piggy is not feeling great. Hang on in there. the first few days can be rough until the body is settling down and starts healing. ;)

My own Morwenna has had this operation last month and is doing perfectly well now after a wobble on the night of her return.

She is due too being aggressive to the others, I'm hoping to put the cage next door tomorrow, I have brought one of her friends down to speak through the bars and there were no teeth chattering so I'm hopeful they will rebond happily now the nasty hormones are gone! 😊 Xx
