I had a sow in 2 wks ago on Tuesday she has a very swollen rolleyes she is only a young guinea **** around 9 mths old she is very well in herself but she had been used for breeding **** back to back.I took her to see AP and i put her on baytril and daktarin oral which i put on her privates as it seemed to be a yeast infection as it was very think crusty which was blocking her wee hole up after removing the crust she looked very sore down there but after using the daktarin oral gel down there is seems alot better and not has inflamed she has now come off the baytril as i dont like to keep guineas on it for to long if ness but today there is a little bit of discharge around her privates so she is now back on the baytril if there is no improvement next week i will see a vet,but what i want to know is has anyone seen this before in a sow and is it poss because of breeding and if she was bred from at a young age..
I dont think that the vets could put her on anything different than what she has been on..
she isnt having any problem passing wee and the wee is of normal colour and she is gaining weight brill and eating great another sow that came in with her also had womb problems as she has infection in there but after been on baytril she recovered with in 3 days..
her Y shape looks like a boy but she is a sow its just how swollen she is i also dont know how long ago she littered but I'm guessing just over 3mths ago...

does anyone have any clues what it could be and what treatment she will need?

I think it's 0.5ml twice a day for the paediatric septrin :)
use the bio-lapis too if she's been on the anti b's for a while.

Not sure why she's still swollen though, she so lovely I hope she gets better soon X

Would letting her have a little bottom soak in warm salty water help to ease things a bit? GP recommended this for a friend's child when she had a yeast infection. Only a thought. :)

It's important to give the whole course of an antibiotic: if you don't the bacteria can become resistant. And there are only three antibiotics usable on guinea pigs.

Are you sure? I know only one is licensed for use in guinea pigs, but there are at least five more that come to mind here that have been used very successfully on guineas. Two - Baytril and Septrin - are used more extensively than the others, but the others are safe.

Mmm ... how long has she been on antibiotics, was it for something before the swelling or just since the swelling? I ask because my son, aged about 3 at the time, many years ago, was on antibiotics and one day had very swollen privates ") not discharge but very swollen :(

The doctor said it was because his body was reacting to the antibiotics I was told to stop them although halfway through the course.

Probiotics will help her too.

Hope she improves soon :)

Well, maybe I'm misremembering. This was something Vedra said, so you can ask her to expand on it next time you see her. It might have been 'officially approved for' rather than 'safe for' guinea pigs.

I've had a think Claire and no ideas so far unfortunately, I've no suggestions other than what you are already doing. Will keep thinking on it though.

Alex, it sounds likely to be only a few that are officially approved for pigs, will check this with her at some point.

she seems a little but not a lot better i have been syringe feeding her cranberry juice as ive notice she doesnt really drink much..
could be the acidity in her wee causing the problem need to keep a close eye out for gritty wee:(
