Sorry, but the spammers are out again. I am particular disgaust because it's happened on little princesses kym and aggie's rip thread :0:0:0grrrrgrrrrgrrrr:(:(

Hi, Spammers very often just seem to have a series of numbers for their user name. Is there anyway, this type of name can just be automatically barred? If it could, it would reduce some of them xx

I wouldn't get upset, they are robots, not even a real person so they don't know what threads they are doing it on. They did it on Flora's thread too.

I noticed that Google have started putting codes up for you to type in when you search for forums so obviously they are getting around that by using other search engines that don't have that facility.

Yahoo Pool used to have loads of bots on but since having the code on their site all the bots have stopped! :)

I've said on Claire's thread, can a code be introduced, it changes on each log in for each user and that would stop them completely. It has worked on other websites were robots used to run chat rooms into the ground. :)

Just wondering... is there always a mod 'on call'? So if at 3 o clock in the morning we report a spammer, or anything else, is there some poor mod sat in front of the computer waiting to help us out? x

Thanks Julie, I'm sure its just a piece of script, I know nothing though me about computer html! :))

Haha imagine that! Poor mod getting out of bed to sort it out. When I was mod on the Man * AOL board it was horrific, you'd clear 1000 bad posts then refresh to find another 2000 posts to go through! And you had to read every one of them!

I must have been crazy! :(|)

LOL, er, sadly no - we are just members like you and it's not a paid job so most of the time we are online when we can be, which is why we often rely on members to report these things, but sometimes we are lucky and manage to get to them before the members see the posts! :)

In case this thread looks slightly confusing to the OP, I have merged the other thread about spam with this one so we don't have several going on at once.

would it be possible to have a couple more mods who deal with spammers only, who can delete spam threads? this might help with the time it takes for them to get removed?

Spambots work on keywords such as "for sale, wanted and offered", so while you have a for sale board, I am afraid you'll continue to get hit right across all boards. I would suggest starting a for sale wanted board specifically through facebook but not all members use it and it already being too late to protect the boards unless you are able to use Louise's suggestion!

Alternatively, blocking IP's and being vigilant is the only way currently available, until admin can answer. If the spammer uses another IP just block that. If general mods do not have this function then I urge admin to release IP blocking to them!

Lets help by reporting as soon as we see spammers.

With respects to getting upset! I wouldn't waste my time, just click report and forget it. :)p

I know what you mean Pete, I saw this on your Flora's thread and thought how awful, if people are going to spam, they should be more respectful. But of course you're right these are machines not people so no point in being upset about it. x

General mods do have the capacity to ban IPs. When we spot spammers we automatically ban them the same time we delete their posts, but obviously cannot stop them from re-registering on a different IP, or the ten other bots waiting to take its place.

The mods get an email when we have a reported post and try to be online asap to sort it out, but unless we happen to be online at the same time, it's possible that the spam may have to remain until a mod is able to come online, but in general the spam is removed as soon as we can. As Peter said, please do continue to hit "report" and try and ignore it, and don't even waste your time commenting on any spam on the affected thread.

The only problem is you have few too mods for such a worldwide board! Lets make it easier somehow :)p One possible solution is to have a couple of people on permanent Spam watch and if possible redirect all reports to those people - this would help also as I said previously "remove the for sale board"! People can use ebay or the like for that and if they want to give people here first chance then just do a message in general chat as this will help fight the botters.

Is it the title of the section that is picked up on Pete? Could there be a different title? or is it all the wordings in the posts/threads 'for sale' in which case changing the thread name would be of no use (bit like me with computers rolleyes)

Unfortunately it's the wording! but by removing the for sale section would help! Using wording Like "I have "something" available" or "Does anybody want or need" would get past virtually all bots! Obviously other wording could be used lol

I've come across a couple of spammer, but didn't know what to do.
Where can I find the "report" button, please?

It's the red triangle button on the right hand side on each post. :)

I just want to say a quick Sorry to Boureki (Julie) lol, I think you're gonna be a busy girl lol :)p

Don't forget these spammers get paid to spam and are making a fortune out of it!
