Hi there,

Unfortunetly I am having more probems wth Ginger this week :(
Noticed she was off her food a bit and so I took her to the vet today. The vet says she got a build up of gas - I am assumin ot is bloat. She gave her an xray and confirmed there is a lot of gas there and that her guts are spasming.

they are keping her over the weekend as I am so far from hem and they can seringe feed her through the day/night etc...

the vet said she gave her spasmalitic (via injection) which is nomally used for dogs and is used to relax the gut. Does any one have any experienced with this drug? The vet seems pretty good but I want to make sure.

Also do you think his could be related to her op about 3 weeks ago? and the follow up Batryl treatment - she was doing fine until this week :( She's always been such a helth pig until I found this blasted lump!

Although i id have to separate her from her cage mates as she bit one of thm. I wondering if she might have ben in ain or a ehile the poor thing :{

I hope she is feeling better soon :) Ive never heard of that drug before I'm afraid

I havent heard of one being used in a piggie but a spasmolytic if I'm right in saying is something like Buscopan, which is certainly used in cats/dogs, and humans. It relaxes the guts to stop spasming, which will be v painful if ** piggie has bloat.

I'm not certain on piggies doses and side effect, it wont be licenced, but I'm sure it will be ok to use.

I cant tell you much more than that I'm afraid.

I doubt it would be related to the op, 3 weeks is a long time after so i v much doubt unless shes been unwell since. All wounds/recovery should be over by now.

Just had a similar problem with Oscar, he had a build up of poops in his gut, he was in real pain :-( the vet gave him oral Zantac which is a gut stimulant, not sure if that's the same thing? It got his guts moving, and with Metacam which is a pain reliever/anti inflammatory, I'm thrilled to say, touch wood, he is now 95% better. He was at the vets for syringe feeding all day Tuesday and I'm sure that's what helped keep his bowels moving. He was so thrilled to be back with his ladies. I'm guessing it was caused by brussell sprouts so I'm leaving all brassicas out of his diet for now. Have you made any diet changes? I'm guessing a course of anti biotics may have contributed to this problem.
Best wishes she'll be well again soon. Such a worry. At least she's in the right place for the weekend. Good luck!

I was at my vet yesterday, well for different reasons. Bette bloated last week was at the vet and was given forgastrin. Well last night she bloated again. I have managed to get her poop moving again hoping to be back to the vet soon.

My vet told me not to give Busopan, he said it slows the gut down. I have heard of a drug called metaclopramide on another forum, does the same thing (gut stimulant).

Perhaps google it and check. I don't know whats happening so many unhealthy pigs it isn't half stressful I can tell you that for nothing.

Thanks I have googled it but can't really find anything. I think it might be the drug type rather than actual brand.
The vet is due to call me later for an update. I really hope it's good news.
I will ask more info then.

Thanks. Yeah i think itis the drug type. I will ask mopre when the vets calls later.

I haven't changed her diet at all whih I why I thought that maybe it would be related to the op. Maybe the Batryl course?

I'm having the same issues as you although mines is ongoing. IT's horrendous, I really hope its a one off for your girl.

Goodness, how do you cope with that then. Do you have to be very careful with diet etc..?

I just hope Ginger makes it. The vet did say it was quite severe :(

I dont know then, metoclopromide is an antisickness and improves gut motility, but not a spasmolytic, and as for Zantac its a gut protectant/anti acid, so I'm not sure what the vet was talking about. Sorry

Me again Unfortunately Ginger is doing the best.
She's back from the vets but still not eating, the vet thought that maybe she would be more likely to want to eat in familiar surroundings.
But I can tell she wants to but she can't, it's really upsetting.

I am now thinking that it is probably something with the mouth/teeth rather than bloat...?

The vet said her back teeth were very good but she goes to try and eat and then she just can't. Don't really know how to explain.

So Shall I give her some more buscopan tonight and do the whole massage thing (guess it can't harm)?

Obviously she is being syringed fed but is there anything else I can do until she can gp back to the vet (which will be tomorrow if she is still not eating)?

Thanks

Does she appear bloated, is she still pooping?

What vet do you use?

No the bloating has gone down. She is pooping very little and also very small skinny poops but wopndering if this is maintly through not eating?

The vet I use is this one:

Lawton & Stoakes Veterinary Surgeons
8-12 Fitzilian Avenue, Harold Wood, Romford, Essex, RM3 0QS

They are specialist exotic and seemed t know wht they were talking about but today she mentioned giving a GA to have a proper check of the back teeth. No really sure thats entirely necessary (especialy as she had a GA only 3 weeks ago!) She did look at the teeth previously and said they looked great.

Do you think I should try somewhere else? :{

Thanks

If you have a look at my thread, my vet was able today to see Bettes back tooth has a spur and is growing into the gum. He is the first vet, I have used that has been able to look in my pigs mouth, he will be doing her dental next week without a GA (as he stated the work is so little).

My previous vet wasn't interested in the fact Bette was losing weight rapidly.

I would try elsewere.

Thanks, where is that vet please? She's not even taking her CC tonight 8...
I have given het some Buscopan and also some baby calpol in cse she is in pain in her mouth and that's what's keping her from eating.

I'll have to try the seringe again later.
What's not helping is that I am full of flue and the vet is 1.5 hours away from me on the train/bus!

A bit far from you, in Falkirk (Scotland), but I would post and see if there is one closer to home.

Yes a bit far but thanks anyway!
I am in central London and have posted numerous time about vets near me. Trust me they re harto come by in London.

I think there is one about 2hrs away who will do teeth without GA so will try them tomorrow morning.

Thanks
