Spay tomorrow, am I ready?

After her spay on Wednesday, Lightning has tonight, Friday night, resumed charging about the cage when she hears a bag wrinkle, and has been eating normally throughout. She seems in good spirits after a dozy Thursday.

I can't see that she'd still need emeprid ? unless it's useful for the possible fluid retention stage of an antibiotic free spay as done at Cat and Rabbit Clinic..?

The only other time I've done meds was in December with my boar and he would open his mouth when the syringe was pushed in. Lightning has jaws of steel and is clamping shut. Any tips?

I guess I'd carry on the loxicom for a few more days.. the spay info sheet didn't say.
 
If she is back to her usual self and eating and pooping normally, she should be fine without the emeprid, it is given as a precaution really, as an effect of the anaesthetic/opp can be to slow the guts down. I would still try and give it but not to stress if you are unable
 
Emeprid is a gut stimulant given preventatively to help her over the first three days while she still is in discomfort.
If she is otherwise OK, then leave be and do not worry.

Thank you. The spay sheet and meds bottles gave no info on how long to give meds. How long would you think loxicom should be given? Spay was Wednesday.

Thanks for merging, wasn't sure whether new question would be new thread but know now.
 
Could anyone please advise from my questions last night, how long to give loxicom and any tips for mouth clamping?

Bit worrying with no guidance from vet.

I was told three days with Hapus and my previously spayed sows as that is when the body settles down and healing is fully underway. However, if you are worried, give it for a week.
You angle the syringe in sideways. metacam, as it is flavoured with honey, tends to go down well once a piggy realises that there no other nasties to follow! I always start with the best tasting meds.
 
After a major op I would imagine she should have the loxicom for up to a week... better to make sure there's no discomfort or inflammation that might make her start biting her surgery wound! She probably doesnt need the emeprid if she is eating and pooping well.
Will she not even take the loxicom? If you go in from the side with the syringe there should be a natural gap between her front and back teeth you can squirt into... but by all accounts loxicom tastes lovely, most piggies will drink it all day!
Its better to syringe it to get the correct dosage but if she really wont have it that way maybe she'd lick it off a cucumber slice?
Sounds like she's doing well anyway to be fighting the meds syringe!
 
Thanks yes she seems strong. She's normally laid back. I'm anxious that the struggle with meds could cause damage. I have metacam from December. But struggling to get one med into her will be better. I will carry on then with the pain meds and try the side of her mouth. She's just been so different to medicate than previous piggy.

Use our piggy whispering tips to remind her to cooperate and then plenty of praise and encouragement. Once piggies realise that medication is there to help make them better, it usually becomes much less of a struggle but the first hurdle is always the highest.

I am always guided by the piggy. If they seem fine, and are eating well, after a few days, then I stop pain relief and gut meds.
